The number of bricks per bag of cement depends on the the size. There are different sizes. Another factor depends on how strong you want the bricks to be which depends on the sand - cement ratio.
Sand also depends on the type of trip (single or double) by the truck. |

I can help a little, sand is ordered by the trip,it varies where the delivery site is and of course how big the lorry is maybe work on D4000 upwards, bricks can be either 4" or 6" generally 4" ones 28 to the bag for a strong brick, more sand you put in the weaker the brick, there are dealers and manufactures that will sell you "firebricks" or other types of brick made with different sands with cement added, these places will show you scientific data about their products,(mind you that could perhaps be made up by anybody!) In general there are teams of men who specialise in block making on your site, tell them how many bricks you want and they will give you a price per brick, bricks should be left for some time to cure in the sun,I would recommend that you get a chair and several drinks and watch the work and the bags of cement yourself, and hire a watchman to look after your property it is not unknown for cement and completed blocks and other building materials to disappear.!! I would also suggest that YOU go to the supplier when buying anything and pay yourself unless you absolutely trust another person to do that for you |

Toubab, you seem to know this very well. I used to have my old mother to sit the whole day counting the number of cement bags the workers took from the store during the brick making. Even under her eyes, they tried to steal a bag and were apprehended and fired. |

okay i will work on 20 to the bag , definately will have someone watching, i am building a classroom . am at the i must do this before christmas 2012. it is a big project, it is do-able, as for the chair and watching i will be doing that. Plan one, send money to buy cement bags, be there when they are bought and delivered to the school. spend one week sitting, have had practice at that. Have offers of watchmen, but the school has one so we should be safe. stage one, get money.

Hi Jambo are you going to start building during the rainy season or a you going to wait until it's finished? Don't you think you should be there when they start laying the foundations and over see them? Builders need to have Supervisors to make sure they are on schedule and ensure the job is up to spec otherwise expenses soar rapidly.
What will be the extent of local participation in the building of the project. Maybe you could enlist the help of some Apprentices who can be trained on the job. So when inevitable things start to go wrong in the future. They can maintain the property themselves. |

hi there, thanks for the feedback, i plan to use the people i used on the last project, when the New zealand couple built a school, they were good and want to work. sending money in advance is better for me, i have sent money before and it will be to buy the cement bags only, i will pay for everything else when I am there. I will be in control of everything, i have been visiting the place for over a year and now is the time to move and make decisions. it is a senior secondary school, some else is building the middle school, so there are plenty of people around. i could not build by remote control, nope not working. during the rainy season they want to knock down walls, clear the land and let it settle. |

Keep up the good work Jambo. Don't forget the transportation plus the loading and and unloading fees. |
