 Jayangfara,
you have done a lot of research and how deep you want to go is up to you. perhaps you forget that even you yourself have to ASK to gather the information or READ about it. so we all rely on a source.
like all works yours must also be subject to questioning and debate, you can't say you are right and everyone is wrong.
i only write what i have read, enquired about, have been told and what i have seen in my travels.
if Jahumpha is from northern Nigeria then enlighten us with the evidence. i'm asking you now.

Hey my brother njucks, Ya you are right I ask and research.Ya I get my sources from people and Ya I read.
But I didn't ever said you were wrong and I was always right!no way I never said any of that.Give me proof where I said I was right and someone is wrong?,I repeated your words where you said I was sleeping and more than wrong to assume that Njie,Taal Jahumpa ect were what I said they are. That was from you not my words.
I will always try not to say anybody is wrong in history as sources vary from place to place. So your source may be different from mine but when you try to erudite it,you always see the link.
Now you want to know only about Jahumpha and not the rest? Ya Jahumpha is oreginally from Zaria. They are the nerthern trades men of the Jakumpa Housa clan who were very influncial in the region and had many trade ties with Yunfa the then Alafin. When Ousman Danfogdio (The Islamic reformist) defeated the king, many of the Jakumfas fled southwords and some went to settle in the now northern Ivory-Coast and Benin and maybe some came to the Gambia. In Benin,Jahumpha is spelt Jacumfa and Nigerians spell Jahumpha as Jakumpa .In the 1244s,the Jahumpas had the first intermarriage with the Sosso clan... To be continued.. peace Janyanfara |

Good day all Bantaba Members. I have been ill hence my absence from bantaba. Grateful to be back.
Maple,
According an oral historian in Banjul, The Cham clan from Sukuta came from FutaToro and that they are Toucoulor/Fulani of origin.
The saying that SANTA AMUL KERR(a surname belongs to no specific household) is coined by those urban dwellers in the Senegambian region DAKAR to BANJUL who have lost their true ethnicity. E.g Taal's in Banjul are Toucolor/Fulani origin but today most of them especially the younger generation call themselves wolof. There are wolof Jallows nowdays who are normally fulani. The surname Ngum too is serere, but Alieu Ngum is more Mandinka today than before. His serere ancestors settled in Tujereng a fishing village.Fishing being the serere's primary occupation. Tujereng is predominantly mandinka speaking. Chi jaama folks |

Oh MADIBA, YOU MAYBE TOO OLD BUT WE STILL NEED YOU! WELLCOME AND GOOD HEALTH.
maple, Cham is Dembajang. The Great smith during the Mali Empire Farakuru Kante was the anscestor of the Chams. His son Surijang Kanteh was sometimes called by many as="Demba sinkiling tamanya kononto"[meaning Demba one leg with nine different ways of walking.]After the fulani invation, many of the smiths, like the Kantes,{Sarahules called them Tunkara)Sisahos,Chams(Fulas called them Cham Bailo)[meaning Cham the smith],ect were taken by the fulas and many thus learn the fula language but history told us that the Chams are the real Dembas=[Dembajang or Sorijang]
I hope I tried to give you some clue.Though History varies from generation to generation, where you will find Chams in many tribes,my sources had it that they were oreginal mandinkas. peace Janyanfara |

I concur. Cham is Fulani. It is probabaly only in Sukuta and some village in Kiang(for got the name) after Kiang Nema you will find Cham Mandinkas. These are the only two Cham Mandinka settlements i know of in the Gambia. Chams are found mainly in CRD and notably in Kuntaur and Chamen in Nianija. They are also found in Koli Kunda just after Lamin Koto but before Jarumeh Koto. A famous person in the name of Koli Mbacke comes to mind. They are realated to the Chams in Chamen. Infact those in Kuntaur are from Chamen. They are the traditional chiefs in that region interlocking with the mighty Ceesays of Saloum from Porrli to Njau who are decsendants of SAWALO MUSA CHENDU CEESAY a very powerful ruler who unfortunately has not apperared in any Gambian History book i have ever read. I think Patience Sonko also missed this great ruler in her book. Almost 80% of all local leaders in Upper Saloum are ceesays from Alkalo to Chief and it has been that way for generations. Whole villages are ceesays with few spots of Tourays and Mbyes here and there. |

the name Su-Kuta says it all. its not an old village itself and i guess the land must have come from the older villages around like Lamin or something.
infact next to Sukuta you have a similar story of a smaller settlement Sanchaba Sulay Jobe. these villages are not very old.
but it shows exactly what we have been discussing all along. our grandparents just migrated here and there and picked up the local ethnicity as a convenient way of blending in.
i dare say, Sukuta-rians are famous for being hardliners. . very conservative people |

Sanchaba sulay jobe is very new. Infact it is part of Sukuta. There was an Alkalo issue when sukuta would not let Sanchaba Sulay Jobe to be "Free" and have their own alkalo. The Jobes were settled there by people of Sukuta but the settlement gree rapidly and needed some independence from the mainland
