Good day all Bantaba Members. I have been ill hence my absence from bantaba. Grateful to be back.

Maple,

According an oral historian in Banjul, The Cham clan from Sukuta came from FutaToro and that they are Toucoulor/Fulani of origin.

The saying that SANTA AMUL KERR(a surname belongs to no specific household) is coined by those urban dwellers in the Senegambian region DAKAR to BANJUL who have lost their true ethnicity. E.g Taal's in Banjul are Toucolor/Fulani origin but today most of them especially the younger generation call themselves wolof. There are wolof Jallows nowdays who are normally fulani. The surname Ngum too is serere, but Alieu Ngum is more Mandinka today than before. His serere ancestors settled in Tujereng a fishing village.Fishing being the serere's primary occupation.
Tujereng is predominantly mandinka speaking.
Chi jaama folks

I concur. Cham is Fulani. It is probabaly only in Sukuta and some village in Kiang(for got the name) after Kiang Nema you will find Cham Mandinkas. These are the only two Cham Mandinka settlements i know of in the Gambia. Chams are found mainly in CRD and notably in Kuntaur and Chamen in Nianija. They are also found in Koli Kunda just after Lamin Koto but before Jarumeh Koto. A famous person in the name of Koli Mbacke comes to mind. They are realated to the Chams in Chamen. Infact those in Kuntaur are from Chamen. They are the traditional chiefs in that region interlocking with the mighty Ceesays of Saloum from Porrli to Njau who are decsendants of SAWALO MUSA CHENDU CEESAY a very powerful ruler who unfortunately has not apperared in any Gambian History book i have ever read. I think Patience Sonko also missed this great ruler in her book. Almost 80% of all local leaders in Upper Saloum are ceesays from Alkalo to Chief and it has been that way for generations. Whole villages are ceesays with few spots of Tourays and Mbyes here and there.

I WANT TO TEACH YOU YOUR COUNTRY AS YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR COUNTRY WELL.

Despite knowing Yero baol ect, Koli Mbake would tell you I should be a history student.I met him when I went to the Gambia the last time.

Kon boy I now know the Gambia to the tip of my fingers.

As Jaliba kuyateh said" NEE MANG CHAP TEH MOO MEII HOROMA MOO MEII BUNYA (people now respect morney)ect",I believed that is true with Gambian society today.Because I used to think of the poor little boy at Armitage and after... ITS JUST SAD

maple,
Cham is Dembajang. The Great smith during the Mali Empire Farakuru Kante was the anscestor of the Chams. His son Surijang Kanteh was sometimes called by many as="Demba sinkiling tamanya kononto"[meaning Demba one leg with nine different ways of walking.]After the fulani invation, many of the smiths, like the Kantes,{Sarahules called them Tunkara)Sisahos,Chams(Fulas called them Cham Bailo)[meaning Cham the smith],ect were taken by the fulas and many thus learn the fula language but history told us that the Chams are the real Dembas=[Dembajang or Sorijang]

I hope I tried to give you some clue.Though History varies from generation to generation, where you will find Chams in many tribes,my sources had it that they were oreginal mandinkas.
peace

Thanks JAN, I really enjoy your history tips. I really miss everyone while away. How i wish we could have seen the real faces behind these wonderful people on this bantaba.

Regarding the CHAMs, they are originally SMITHS(black or silver). They are in Fulas, Sereres, Mandinka, Wolof, the common denominator here is that they are always SMITHS. In Fula(BAILO),Wolof(NYENYO BALA MAISA). I would like to know their compliment in Serere and Mandinka. By compliment, i mean e.g. Bah (Bahpulo), Jallow(Jallowjerry), Njie(njiejatta), Cham(chambailo), Manneh(manneh kadang), Bojang(bojang jarri, bojang tamba, bojang sankaragka).

There are some surnames which came about in certain group because of wars and eventually captivity. These captured prisoners remained with their masters and gradually lost their originally language and identify with that of their masters. In Senegal amongst the toucoulor there are SARR, NDOW who were originally serere. These people now speak Fula BUT has maintained their professional heritage that's fishing. Their clan is known within the fulani as CHUBALO. They are the Toucoulor fishermen.

Thanks waiting for more tips.
