Thanks, the great mythical being ,am glad we are on the same page and sort of share the same views about Gambia. It is a very sad situation and am pretty sure it will take longer than anticipated to wipe out corruption and instill a true democratic government in Gambia, as long as we are still stuck in the 20Th century following leaders around like they are kings and our deeply rooted cultural practices. We will be facing the same problems in the aftermath of Jammeh's regime and still be crying and blaming Jammeh / Jawara/whoever becomes president afterwards for failing us Gambians. Personally speaking i really do agree to everything you had to say and took a brief moment to try to Understand what went wrong with Sheriff Dibba .You are very right that he is one of the first Men who stood up and took responsibilty for something he supposedly was accused of.Its indeed a relief to know that his resignation was based on the fact that he was was taking responsibility for his irresponsibility since his brother was using a state issued vehicle to transact his business. The ONLY problem i have with that is how come he did not know or was it because that was his brother or is it true that he was clueless about the whole situation.Mind you it was a ministerial vehicle being used issued to Dibba himself.............peace |

That is not a problem. You see in the Gambia, once you hold public office every family member wants to be seen in the car you are allocated either being given a free ride or commandeering a poor driver for some personal errands. It is this culture of IT IS OUR TURN. The turn here means the family not the country. In fact families create more problems than the officials themselves. Uncles and nieces and nephews show up and want you to give them a job. They don’t care how.
If you don’t they will brand you as bad and some may even want to forsake you. This fear of loosing ones family make public officers give in. They want to be compensated for all what they did for you as a young man. THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH. ONLY THOSE WHO TURN OUT TO BE UNSUCCESSFUL WOULD ESCAPE BUT NOT WITHOUT INSULTS OF SOME SORT.
I will not be surprised if Sheriff's brother had not taken the car without his permission and the poor driver cannot refuse or else he might loose his job or get transferred. Every Driver wants to be in the Minister's driving pool because of privileges like driving a new car, attending big functions, privilege of taking the car home, endless supply of petrol coupons which end up being discounted at gas stations, or emptying fuel tanks in the famous JERRY CANS (20 liter drums) and some crumbs from the big man during weekends. Some even use it to get family members into gainful employment. Some drivers literally owned the cars allocated to them. In addition, the 4x4s are also used for visiting marabous and only trusted Drivers and in many cases family members drive them. Secondly, many drivers are chosen by the minister him self especially the 4x4 and the domestic sedan car. In some case they choose all the drivers. Divers fall under Grade one of the integrated pay scale and as such are not subjected to the provisions of the Pensions Act, Public Service Act and also the Public Service Commission Regulations. They can be hired and fired at the ministry level. This goes for all Grade one public servants and daily paid employees. The minister is therefore both the judge and juror.
In addition, ministers were allocated at least three vehicles: one official sedan car for work, another 4x4 for mostly treks upcountry and another household sedan car for domestic use by the wife, kids etc. Depending on how important you are you can get more than three vehicles for free. This comes with free gas, maintenance, insurance and no liabilities whatsoever. So you see, the brother can always use the 4x4, which will hardly be used by sheriff, and he would not even notice. He could borrow the car planning to the village or some important family errands.

Wau, This is indeed intresting.Kondorong Sheriff was not only fired for Kutibo's(his brother's) butut scandal,no you could remember when he was vice president,he removed many chiefs from their post who did not support the PPP during the roads to democracyMany chiefs supported the UP of P.S.Njie even if you were not born then but you must have heard of this ya?Well he wa accused of letting some chief stay in light of supporting him on his lobby to retain both vice president and Education minister post as some of those chiefs were choosen by Sheriff himself to serve in parliament as the government choose five chiefs to sit in parliament then. This was reported to Jawara and three of those chiefs were removed coupled with the butut scandal and his trying to undermine Jawara's authority as he Sheriff was a chief's son(Mansaringo) and Jawara was a lether smith's son(Farabandingo) and then caste system was rife.
I can see moe dancing pachanka.Or are you dancing Bukarabu? I don't hate Sheriff but I think sheriff still bore some grudges against Gambians for not voting him president as it can be seen in his every move.He is an uncle I respect but I belief in truth and equality.Someone who don't in anyway belief in caste system.I think it had taken us back wards rather than forward. Neither am I supporting Jawara.Infact I agree with all of you that Jammeh system is a relpica of Jawara the only difference is Jammeh uses brutality to grip people with fear. Peace Mankajang Janyanfara. |

The caste system was abig problem. am happy that it is dying out. It makes no sense to like or hate someone based on his profession. Well is it not funny that the cobblers prepared all the jujus that the socalled free born tie all over their bodies. How about the smits that made the cooking pots, beds, spoons etc. If they are harmful why did we depend on them for survival. The socaled free borns would never marry them.
Thank God that era is over. |

Njucks lets continue on what we gathered on the assignment given. President Abdou Joof was for Senegal at that time. Like I said there was no army but an amateur unequiped Field Force with the Gambia Police Force under the Inspector General of Police who happened to be called Mass Jarra. I must pay tribute to some prominent elders and statesmen well respected in Gambian politics namely Trade Unionist and pioneer with Kwame Krumah of the AU (formerly OAU) commonly called "Jallow Jallow"; a vocal unionist, The late Sanjally Bojang, Pa Alhaji Sulay Sarr, Alhaji Momodou Musa Njie, Alhaji Girigara Njie, and Banjul Imam at that time being Eliman Alhaji Momodou Lamin Bah and others.
When NCP was formed they appear to be more of a revolutionary party inspired by Saikhou Touray of Guinea. They took white as their banner but their political rallies were scary as you will see them with all kinds of matchets, knives, cutlasses, local made Guns ("Mbohadom") and arabic scripts ("Hatim") written covering virtually the whole clothes lead by Sheriff Mustapha Dibba and deputy Musa Ceesay a business man and eventually became President of the wrestling Association. Thats why after the coup was foiled most of supporters of NCP were victimised.
From those strange political rallies with those features of army of stalwarts ready for a fight things started developing, fermented and hatched in the field force at Bakau. One morning radio Gambia announced that an incident occured at Bakau that in the early hours of the morning that one soldier named Danso has shot death Mahoney Commander of the field force. Danso was jail for life but it was strange why Mahoney was eliminated. However immediately when the coup was announced Danso was the first to be freed and all prisoners released together to reinforce them. Then things came to light that Mahoney found them (Kukoi's team and Danso)on their secret plot during his routine checks and Danso decided to eliminate him before he leaked anything. However please verify facts further on certain things mentioned above.
I have attempted to search for information on this topic but with restrictions was able to gather some useful links with brief information as follows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kukoi_Samba_Sanyang
Note:- a)Full name of Kukoi is Kukoi Samba Sayang Aka Dominic Savio.
b)Twelve members revolutionary council namely :- 1. Kukoi, 2. Simone Talibo Sanyang or Sanneh or Bojang (Rectify please!) 3. Apai Jammeh or Bojang (Rectify please!) 4. to 12. is a question mark for me to recalled them. Hope Bantaba members can compiled full lists. Therefore please participate if anyone can recalled them.
c) Heads of State of the Gambia under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heads_of_State_of_The_Gambia
d) Category of rebels under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/category:Rebels
e) Searched for the speech desperately and in particular from Gambia National Archives but totally restricted and highly classified site existed (Warning no access!).
To be continued!

kOBO
Only records over 30 years can be found at the archives. With the new National Records Office, there is another layer called the Semi- current records section accessible only by ministry and directorate employees mostly their own closed files. The documents are then reviewed as to whether they can be sent to the archives unit for public viewing. There is a Committe responsible for this and i think memebers are from the National Records Office, National Meseum, Permanent Secreataries of PMO and the Vice President's Office. The Archives used to be under the Vice Presidents Office atleast before 1994. Then again with so many changes, it can only be a wild guess.
Another option is to check the archives section of the Gambia Daily and ask for newspaper publications of 1981. You will find it. Otherwise, go back to the Archives and ask for press cuttings of 1981. Ask for all the newspapers in circulation like the Daily, the Torch, etc. Newspaper cuttings are not classified and you will find it.

I dont remember alot about it since i was very at the time, but i do remember seeing a picture of my elder brother Rilwan lowe on the front of the newspaper almost half naked. i also do remember seeing senegalaise soldiers at our home asking for his photo so as to arrest him. He was later arrested, but some how managed to flee the country. By the way he died in Togo few years ago. May his soul rest in peace. |
