Is gun owmership common in Gambia? In Uk it still isnt...but knives are often used in fights.....government is trying hard to cut this down....but how do we tackle it? Schools in inner city areas are talking about scanning pupils into school........ Lots of issues...civil liberties etc....
It was once said that what usa has now..we will be 10 years down the line....... i hope that prediction is wrong and we can turn the tide...... |

Thank you very much Kond's for a very unbiased and factual analysis of the the Gambian dilemma. It will take the best critic years to try to portray Jawara as an undemocratic or a corrupt individual for i personally know when the petty thieves in his regime were busted they would be crawling on their kneesin his office begging for their jobs and if that didn't work ,There was always a delegation of Imams and mostly village elders who came asking Sir Dawda to forgive their Man.If jawara was to object to what the people wanted, the consequences were there for all to see ,proof of this is with Sheriff Dibba who was melting our Bututs into copper and selling it in Guinea Bissau. The day he had no choice but to tender his resignation He desecrated the Gambian flag on a state issued vehicle by ripping it off and throwing it away.He formed his own party and his costituency became an opposition strong hold. This is a man who was stealing so much from the people yet that's not what his people said or thought.Instead all blame was casted on Jawara and his PPP regime.I totally agree about the failures of the PPP regime and their incompetence yet all the ministers came from Different constituents representing their people .The average man will not understand why there were so many illiterates in the PPP cabinet when there was enough qualified Gambian's to handle the Job and it will all come back to the same old story that 70 percent of the population is made up of villagers and they get to choose who rules. One thing we can all agree on is that Jawara ruled with the people's wishes in mind.It would have been a political suicide if he ever decided that he would not meet the expectations of the people mainly illiterates and half baked illiterates. His regime would have been long gone and forgotten if he did not do exactly what the villagers wanted.Am pretty sure you know there was always some kind of a delegations from almost every constituent during the Jawara ERA viewing their opinions. We have heard on several occasions how Jawara betrayed the villagers who voted him as President and that was mainly because he sometimes would not oblige to what they wanted and wanbtede a new face for Gambia. We had Mansa's throughout every constituent and they jointly ruled with the PPP.As back ward as Gambia was during colonialism with barely any kind of resources the PPP regime has to be given credit for stabilizing the Gambian economy even though they could have done better.30 years ago you could count how many university graduates Gambia had without hitting a number like a Thousand.Blaming the slow pace of development on a bunch of illiterates would be unfair yet giving them credit for getting us out of the hell hole Gambia was is well over due.If Jammeh can't even publish his findings in his little commision of enquiry what makes anyone think they can prove that Jawara or Oj is guilty of corruption.I keep saying it over and over again a CORRUPT MAN does not fight a government, he bows down and hopes people can forget so that he can join the party again.Oj knows mile two more than any Gambian politician so give me a ****ing break the man is as clean as a whistle.Regarding the PPP regime we can all agree there was some very corrupt elements in it and that led to its destruction.Almost everyone knew about the little factions in the PPP regime ,they were all up to no good and are fully responsible for its downfall, this includes some of Sir dawda's very own family members and brother in laws.We all know what happened in gambia so lets keep it real and stop castigating people over bull****.All Jammeh did was replicate the Jawara regime and change it to his liking. He stopped the little Mansa's from ruling or trying to rule and took us to a whole level of political maturity. One thing that he can be given credit for is that.APRC has a grandfather and its no other than the PPP..............peace |

MOE Thanks.
I don’t have a political friend. I only stand for the truth and that means if Jammeh has done any good work i will praise him for that. The same delegations are still coming to Statehouse as we post here on Bantaba. It is an inherent cultural issue that WHERE YOU TIE A COW IS WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO EAT. In effect corruption is condoned by society. I once wrote about TOURAY BUGUT DARRA. He was head of Customs who stayed above corruption and every civil servant in Customs or in Banjul heard of this phrase. He was an honest man who had access to wealth but refused it. I have passed him sometimes on the road to Banjul driving a very old car and a lot of the times needing a tire change or a flat battery. Yet even the customs watchmen are driving SUVs.
Remote control cars were already being driven in the Quadrangle even before Junkung came to power. Yet we remained in abject poverty. Why. Because culture demands it. Have you heard of FULANG DANNA, FAADING DANNA. It is sung by the griots at weddings and naming ceremonies, which encourages patronage, selfishness and arrogance. Why should you boast of being the only person in your family or community who is successful? This is what our culture demands and IT CUTS ACROSS EVRY TRIBE IN THE GAMBIA. IT IS NOT UNIQUE TO ANY GROUP. THIS PROBLEM UNFORTUNATELY IS HERE TO STAY IS THE CORE OF OUR PROBLEMS.
Unfortunately, the system of Government is very new to us. We were used to kings who called the shots and owned everything. In fact as a young man, Chiefs have become Lords in the Gambia, ruling with iron hands. Some Chiefs have been known to tie suspects with iron chains in the middle of their compounds just like you would do to a monkey. This happened in Jarra and else where. Sheriff Dibba must be credited for being the brain behind the removal of some of these Mansas but who have fought tooth and nail to deny him votes and political success. Sheriff is a victim of his stand against tyranny although the Butut scandal by his brother has tarnished his image. However, i think only to an extent. He is the only political figure in our post independence history who resigned his position because of a controversy committed by a family member. NO ONE I KNOW OF HAS EVER DONE THIS. THEREFORE SHERIFF HAS TWO TITLES THAT NO ONE EVER DID IN THE GAMBIA.
I am sure Jayanfara will dilate on this. The chiefs married more than four wives at the same time, yet they continued to instill fear in us. We have not been able to separate ourselves with those cultural issues and they still play in modern politics. When you became a chief your whole family was royalty and now when you become a President or Minister, your family demands a share of the fame and booty from the coffers. Junkung is a history student and he knows this very well. That is why he said he has one million Gambians to select from for positions. It seems like when one his fired his whole family will hate him but another family is jubilating because one of them is in high office.
I hated the delegations and still hate them to this day. It is corrupt, biased and in many cases done for the rich and famous. It is also a travesty to justice and rule of law. People who break the law should not be crawling on their stomach to state house for forgiveness but be in the courts to defend themselves. It is still happening as it was during PPP. A lot of the times they are paid to and financed by the aggrieved person. The worst part of it is when religious leaders who should be taking the pulpit, decide to be political ambassadors. I CHALLENGE ANYONE ON THIS BANTABA OR IN THE GAMBIA, TO NAME ONE RELIGIOUS FIGURE WHO PREACHED AGAINST POLITICAL INJUSTICE OF ANY SORT BOTH DURING PPP AND IN OUR PRESENT TIMES. Instead many are given free tickets for the HAJJ from coffers that belong to all of us. I dare swear by my creator that God will never accept their Hajj. Hajj in Islam is not a necessity if you cannot afford it. THER IS NONE.
WHAT WE HEAR IS QUOTATIONS FROM THE QURAN THAT GOD SAYS WE MUST FOLLOW OUR LEADERS. YES THE QURAN SAID SO BUT THIS HAS TO BE QUALIFIED. THE LEADERS BEING TALKED ABOUT ARE THOSE WHO RUN THE NATION BASED ON ISLAMIC JURISPUDENCE AND NOT MAN MADE LAWS. THIS IS BECAUSE IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE SHARIAH IS A JUST AND EQUITABLE WAY OF DEALING WITH SOCIETAL ISSUES. THERE SHOULD BE NO CORRUPTION IN ISLAM, EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW IS OBSERVED AND NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW OR EVEN HAAVE PREFERRENTIAL PRIVILEDGES.
Unfortunately we do not have an Islamic state and therefore you cannot invoke this Islamic principle in our society. We have a political democracy, which in itself demands checks and balances. To tell us otherwise is to seek to hallucinate that we are both a democracy and a theocracy at the same time, which is impossible. Don’t get me wrong. I am not asking for a theocracy. However whatever we choose to be, we must see our society first before our families.
Innocent poor Gambians have never succeeded to gather a group to speak for them at the powerhouse. This is why i posted a new topic that we deserve Junkung. We created the environment and so we must live in it. HE WHO PAYS THE PIPER CALLS THE TUNES. THE CULTURE OF PATRONAGE IS WHAT IS DRIVING US TO POVERTY. MONKEY WORK BABOON EATS.
