US Embassy Gives Printing Machine to GPU By Awa Bah 13-06-11 The Representatives of the United States and Britain in The Gambia, on Friday, the 10th of May 2011, have jointly presided over the official ribbon cutting for the printing press that their two governments donated to the Gambia Press Union (GPU), held at the Standard Newspaper office in Bakau Newtown.
In his welcoming remarks, the Managing Director of the Standard Newspaper, Mr. Sheriff Bojang described the machine as an enviable gift that has been delivered to the Gambian media by the valuable efforts of the US Embassy. For her part, H.E Pamela White, the US Ambassador to the Gambia, said it is a big day for the US Embassy as this is a dream come true. She said that the Gambian journalists are playing a key role in information dissemination, adding that elections are just at the corner and people who do not have direct access to information will get it through the journalists and that journalists should report professionally. “This is one of the tools that you need to work with and now the ball is in your court,” said Ambassador White. The US Ambassador said journalism is a noble profession, adding that it takes courage to be a journalist in any country in the world. She said the printing machine is to be used by all the media houses in the country, adding that it should be put into good use. She said the public is always at the journalist for what accuracy and objectivity. “We are very pleased to be associated with the Gambia Press Union,” she concluded. The Alkalo of Bakau Alh. Luntang Jaiteh, thanks the donors for the gesture. He said some people wrongly perceive journalism as a negative profession but that that the Gambian journalists are really doing a good work. He advised the journalists not to concentrate in the urban area but to also cover the provinces in their reports and particularly those issues affecting the people. He urged the media practitioners to be sincere and faithful to their profession and audience. On his part, Mr. Ahmed Alota, the Executive Director of the GPU, said the media is really doing its work and is covering events and issues both in urban and rural Gambia. “We have just concluded a four day training on the ethics of journalism for the a group of journalists from the provinces including Basse, Soma, Brikama Ba, Farafenni, Kerewan, Brikama community radio, Hilltop radio and Taranga FM, and we are expecting another batch of 12 participants on the 13th of May 2011”, said Mr. Alota. He assured that efforts are always being made to support the training of journalists to develop their capacities and professionalism.
