Kebba Lamin Dampha, a ten (10) year old boy, residing in Wellingara in Kombo North, was reported to have been hit by vehicles in the presidential convoy that was on its way to the airport to see off the Mauritanian President after his four days visit to the Gambia The accident, which occurred on Monday, 30 May, 2011 at the Tabokoto Highway, led to the untimely death of the young boy which was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.

Speaking to this paper, Mustapha Marong, originally from Badibou Kekoto Kunda and the guardian of the deceased, said the boy, Kebba Lamin Dampha, who was going to Arabic School left on that fateful day to collect his exam results as they were asked by their teacher to come for it. He said the boy however ended up to be part of the pupils from his school who were assembled along the highway to see off the departing president.
According to Mr. Marong, who was sobbing uncontrollably as he explained, eye witnesses reported that it was the vehicle which immediately followed the one carrying the president that first hit Kebba and was followed by the others. He said the eye witness accounts revealed that it was the fourth vehicle which stopped to pick up the young boy and rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mr. Marong said after the accident, some military personnel came to extend his condolences to the bereaved family and has given them three bags of rice, one bag of sugar, and also one gallon of twenty liters of cooking oil, but added that the lose is irreplaceable.

Editor’s Note In the next issue, we will publish the opinions from the school. There is need for the Office of the President to conduct an investigation into the death of the child and establish the facts. This should be followed by expression of opinions on the issue of compensation.
