Culled from Daily Observer newspaper President Jammeh meets service chiefs under http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/president-jammeh-meets-service-chiefs
"Monday, April 04, 2011 The president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Friday afternoon convened a meeting with the service chiefs of the armed and security services in the country, at State House.
The meeting that was attended by the service chiefs, also had in attendance the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, Cabinet ministers, the secretary general and head of the Civil Service, Ebrima O Camara, and other senior government officials. The interface between the president and commander-in-chief of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) and service chiefs that came hard on the heels of similar forums at the presidency, among other things, addressed numerous pertinent issues geared towards not only the enhancement of the operations and functions of the nation’s security apparatus, but also the overall national security with a view to ensuring a more efficient, effective, and above all professional security forces.
Described as timely and important, the forum accorded the commander-in-chief the opportunity to raise eyebrows on some of the persisting problems that do not only hamper efficiency in the service delivery of the security apparatus, but also to some extent impact negatively on the country’s image. The commander-in-chief also seized the opportunity to renew his government’s zero tolerance stance against corruption in all its forms, and warned those that are supposed to enforce the law and protect the life and property to desist from it.
He further deplored the unsavory attitude of some of the officers, which is tantamount to corruption. President Jammeh was emphatic on the need for the service men and women to nurture a high sense of patriotism, discipline, honesty, and commitment to duty with a view to ensuring professionalism, while at the same time justify the confidence reposed on them by the general public. These, he added should be their watchwords at all times. “We either work honestly, live in peace or work dishonestly, get rich very quickly and become a prisoner. You are a disciplined force and you have sworn to protect the lives and properties. If those who are sworn and took the Holy Quran or the Bible to protect the lives and properties become a menace to the lives and properties; I will not be the president that will allow that in this country,” the Gambian leader concluded.
The meeting also attracted the contributions of the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, as well as the ministers of the Interior, Tourism and Culture, and the Attorney General and minister of Justice, Ousman Sonko, Aja Fatou Mass Jobe-Njie, and Edward Gomez respectively who all commented on the issues highlighted and advised a way out. The service chiefs who spoke at the occasion were the chief of Defence Staff of GAF, Lt General Masanneh Kinteh; the Inspector General of the GPF, Yankuba Sonko; and the director general of the NIA, Numo Kujabi.
The meeting was moderated by Fatou Camara, director of Press and Communication, Office of the President.
