The civil suit involving Lawyer Mariam Denton against Mrs Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, former speaker of the National Assembly and the Daily Observer newspaper resumed last Thursday at the High Court in Banjul, before Justice Fatima Singhateh.

When the case was called, Justice Singhateh ordered parties to file their addresses and then adjourned the matter to 16th May 2011 for adoption of briefs. It would be recalled that Lawyer Mariam Denton sued FJC who was at the time, director of Press and Public Relations, Office of the President, for the sum of D10 million as damages for the injury caused to her credit, reputation and profession by publishing defamatory words against her in the Daily Observer newspaper. Denton also sued the Daily Observer newspaper for D5 million as damages for furthering the publication and circulation of the defamatory publication.

The war of words, which resulted to this case, came following Lamin Waa Jumara’s comments published in the Daily Observer of Thursday May 10, 2001, in reaction to a GRTS radio programme on women participation in politics. He [Juwara] had said that Gambian women had equal political opportunities and that they had no cause to complain. He said women should emulate UDP women like Mariam Denton, Mary Jones-Darboe and others who were in the struggle for the restoration of democracy and good governance in the country.

FJC countered Juwara’s assertions, in a story published in the Daily Observer Friday May 11th, 2001 edition. In the story captioned, ‘Juwara is finished’, she commented on Juwara’s allegation that there was opportunism in the issue of women involvement in national politics. In the said publication FJC said: “Those UDP women whom he [Juwara] praised were the opportunists he was referring to. They are following UDP because their brothers, uncles and husbands were corrupt and were implicated by the famous Alghali Commission and other commissions and that we the women of the APRC will follow the party to latter.”
