There has always being a UDP Women's Wing since 1996. It is just being revamped after the retirement of its former president, Aja Jambanding Drammeh of Brikama. So maybe this question needs to be re-framed.

UDP inaugurates new Women’s wing executive committee

The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday inaugurated the party’s new national women’s wing executive committee at a ceremony held at its bureau in Banjul.

The move is part of the party’s preparations for the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections scheduled for 2011 through 2013.......
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the UDP leader, said that 15 years ago nobody thought of seeing the party’s women coming together to form their own women’s wing without the involvement of the men.... http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/udp-inaugurates-new-womens-wing-executive-committee

Well this story does not imply that there was no Women's wing prior but the poll question is implying the exact opposite. Aja Jambanding Drammeh was the president of the women's wing prior to this new development. The only difference between the two is that in this one the women built up the structures themselves without any men involvement. In other words, the women organised themselves without having to look up to men for support, guidiance or encouragement, something that is unprecedented in the party's history, and that is exactly what the UDP leader was alluding to.

When I read your comments sometimes, it makes me wonder if you ever lived in the Gambia.

Come on now Nyarikangbanna, that a bit unfair the fact is that what was written was far from clear and the common sense conclusion was drawn, you can of course as you have done put your interpritation on the words, others can then decide for themselves.

"When I read your comments sometimes, it makes me wonder if you ever lived in the Gambia."

This comment(directed to Momodou) was rather ungracious and uncalled for

I am not putting any interpretation here. I am simply stating the facts as they are and that is, there has always being a UDP women's wing.

What has been attributed to the udp leader is the statement that this is the first time a women's wing took shape without the involvement of men. That has not contradicted the fact that UDP has always had a women's wing. In fact, I name the former president of the women's wing for you and if you care about the truth, you can double-check that fact. The name is AJa Jambanding Drammeh of Brikama. She is now the Honourary president for life of the Women's Wing.

May be the commonsense you are talking about is the one that has gone too nonsensical.

After nearly three decades of existence as a party, maybe we need to start looking at a PDOIS Women's wing [if there is any] and conduct a poll on that too. How about that?

Why not,? I am a great believer in the underrated involvement of women in The Gambia and the responsible good they can bring to may aspects of Gambian life. However I do feel that you are trying to deflect the topic under discussion, which is based on the published statement of "lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the UDP leader"

"May be the commonsense you are talking about is the one that has gone too nonsensical." Maybe, but lets face it its all about politics and you are fully aware of my feeling on that subject You know that the words of those involved in politics are often quoted years after the words have been uttered, for reasons that suit at the time the words are quoted.

I agree, if political and social engineering is allowed to take a very firm grip on society and take over, society will become a pawn of the administration in every country, may the words of those with their own opinions continue to be heard and considered by others to maintain individual thought forever.
