Some big boss must have been inconvienced and as he dosn't own his own ferry had to travel with the people, shame.I have travelled this route many times,may I make some observations ? The ferries arrive in The Gambia in good working order no problem and they go at a good speed and provide a good service FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME,then what happens ? "mechanics" (usually untrained people who know sombody !) decide to fiddle with the machinery,these people hav'nt any idea how things work,or maybe they have,and I am being unfair,? the result is "breakdown" everyone except the passengers are happy,why ? ferry travels very slow less crossings less work,engines are broken,OK run on 2,big saving on diesel (which is probably used elswhere ) I have witnessed the unloading ramp in Banjul unable to slide down smoothly and get jammed preventing unloading,just because the cables and slides have never seen grease for years and are rusted,how was this problem solved ? by forcing the ramp down by loading it with a pick up and van !!,was the equipment greased after that ,of course not,Unfortunately the whole of the ferry service and equipment is in a shambolic state.The Gambians answer to this,OK lets see if someone will GIVE us a new ferry this one is broken,quite true,Who broke it,The Gambian ferry operators and management.

Editorial

Crossing the Banjul-Barra ferry terminal continues to be a nightmare. Whilst the rams where the ferries anchor are out of fashion and not in good shape, the smooth and easy crossing of people, goods and services make the journey extra-tedious. Those who use the route during festive periods like Tobaski know what we are talking about. Hundreds of people and vehicles get stranded at the terminal for days without crossing. In addition to that, the state of the toilet facilities leaves a lot to be desired.

The ferries are also operating with faulty engines due to poor maintenance. There is also constant congestion of the terminals with vehicles and people thereby institutionalising bribery and corruption, not to talk of the arrogant conduct of the auxiliary staff particularly those stationed at the terminals. The ferry also closes early thereby leaving people and vehicles stranded at both ends of the terminal.

We do not need to remind the GPA about the importance of this particular ferry service and public transportation in general. Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world. At this time that the country is moving steadily towards meeting the target date for the national development blueprint, the Vision 2020, free movement of people and goods is very fundamental. In fact, considering the immense contribution of the ferry services to the economy, standards of best practices should govern their operation.

We therefore wish to call on the management of GPA to critically consider the prevailing conditions at the Banjul-Barra ferry services and work towards elevating the standard of the service. Our collective ambitions for national development cannot be achieved without convenience in the free movement of people, goods and services. GPA should therefore not allow itself to be left behind in our collective crusade.

There is no need to wait for 15 months to make the ferries run better,mechanics should be told in no uncertain terms that they must not fiddle with the mechanics of the ferries if they are unqualified to do so,the damage has been done now so a mechanic who is QUALIFIED and knows his business will have to fix the machinery.

"As we strive hard to transform and improve both the facilities and infrastructure of the yard, we humbly beg the understanding and patience of the honourable member and members of the public in our quest to make it the best in the sub-region," she said.

This is very good news that a maintainece facility is being rehabilitated

" According to Vice President Njie-Saidy, this project will be completed in 15 months time, and all GPA ferries will be part of a programme for out-of-water maintenance periodically at the Banjul Shipyard."

Still a problem,enquiries were made by the reporter, just look at the run-around he got;
DON'ASK ME ,ASK HIM,SORRY HE IS OUT,MAKE AN APPOINTMENT
"The officials at the Banjul terminal were contacted but denied the story. One official said the ferry did not have any problem but it was a truck that had a break down. He said normally when trucks have a break down inside or while entering the ferry it causes problems for them. The Public Relation officer (PRO) of the ferry services told the reporter that he was not aware of any problem.
The reporter was then referred to the office of the Director of Ferry services. Mr. Hali Gai. Mr. Gai said that he cannot make a comment. He also referred the reporter to the office of the Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority. The office of the Managing director was contacted and the secretary said that the MD was not in town but she also in turn referred the reporter to the deputy Managing Director. The Deputy Managing Director said the reporter should apply for an appointment with him before he could give a comment."

It really is time that those in charge showed themselves and answered the question "Why are you providing such a poor service ? Doubtless they are being handsomely paid by the Gambian taxpayers,The president must be fully aware of this shambles,the EU are not going to give more ferries if Gambians continue to break what they have.
