The president of the Republic was last week heard on GRTS television saying that he would supply hundred cattle to be slaughtered in the Kanifing Municipality for the Muslim feast, locally called ‘Laylatul Hadr (kitimo)’, a day that many Muslims in the Gambia observe as a night of vigil for prayers in the month of Ramadan. He said he already has 500 cattle heads and that the target is to keep 1000 cattle in stock so as to supply meat from this day towards the end of Ramadan and Eid el Fitr (Koriteh).

This sounds like a communist country where people lineup to receive food rations. The president, in his benevolent dictatorship, may have good intentions. That's assuming he isn't trying to line up his personal pockets... but why the hell can't someone tell him to let the butchers to sell meat at whatever price they want and he, the president, can kick them out of business with his competitive prices.
A friend of mine told me that he is forced to buy and whole goat and freeze it, but how many average Gambians can afford this?

Hey right now when most people in the West are feeling the credit crunch if the leaders of the country were to give them free food to nyam they would not refuse it.

Sister, this is not about credit crunch. This is about government control of every aspect of Gambian life. Jammeh needs to keep his business separate from public enterprises like the the Gambia Livestock Board, and stop interfering with the market. This is a disaster. I would rather be a vegetarian... |

If he is giving food he will expect something back...votes, perhaps?
People will think it is the President who is buying the meat where as I presume he is using public money! |
