Nigerian president suspends team ...

The price of failure for Nigeria's World Cup squad is a two-year ban – imposed by their president. The team has been suspended from international competition for a prolonged licking of wounds after their humiliating exit from the finals in South Africa.

Ima Niboro, a spokesman for the country's president, Goodluck Jonathan, said: "Mr President has directed that Nigeria will withdraw from all international football competition for the next two years to enable Nigeria to reorganise its football. This directive became necessary following the country's poor performance in the ongoing Fifa World Cup."
After meeting the country's World Cup organising committee, Jonathan said the accounts of the Nigeria World Cup organising committee should be audited and the hiring of the coach Lars Lagerback investigated. Niboro added: "If any financial misappropriation is discovered, all officials responsible will be held accountable."

Janko, Is that necessary when the reason is nothing but sports? How many billions of dollars is wasting away each day in Nigeria, yet the leaders seems to be doing nothing about it. Has football become such a problem solver. get real Jonathan. I hope Mr Banana don't support this foolish action. Let the boys play.

Santanfara,
it seems as a national football team, says a lot about its country, some countries do not take it lightly...

The power of sports must not be underestimated. Sports can be a unique catalyst in uniting a whole nation. It can also break a nation. It gives people pride, hope and reasons to live to see......another day. That's why it can also be devastating for a nation.

I wish President Goodluck Jonathan can leave the Nigerian FA to deal with their setback but we all know the corruptions that transpire in that country. Dealing with corruption in Nigeria has proven to be beyond any president's power (look at how Yaradua fought it. Even those who opposed him will tell you he scores high in fighting corruption. So did his predecessor Obasanjo). The whole citizenry in that country needs to change their attitude againts being corrupted one way or the other. So I understand the president's standpoint to direct an investigation that will look into how funds were spent and also to see ways in which a permanent and solid "football house" can be built for their nation. FIFA has reacted though and Sepp Blatter has warned Nigerian politicians not to meddle.

Football is nothing to do with sport these days its all about BIG MONEY,selling overpriced tickets, lots of drink for the fans, lots of customers for hotels and eating places, gone are the days of fun and enjoying the activity as a game.

Well, nothing remains the same and sports/football is no exception, "the good old days"... just another nostalgia.

Senegambia,
you have a point, football has a greater spirit than kicking the ball in 90 minutes, its much more than that. Some observers argue that a national football team is a nation in miniature with all its characteristics, organization, discipline etc.
