Does anyone have any information on how much it would cost to buy a wheelchair in The Gambia? Any names of companies? Do they do repairs too?
Or if I bought one here how would I get it there?!!!

Ask the person to go to the Danish/Gambian Friendship Society Depot at Kanifing and see if they have one for free. If there is none then they can write an application in order to be on the list for one at a later date.
Repairs can be done at the Handicap workshop of the Social Welfare Department I guess. They can also qnquire at the above depot. |

Oh no Bev. I only answer what I know about. Danish/Gambian Friendship Society (Gambias-Venner) apart from sponsoring students, sends items in containers with among other things school equipment and materials, hospital equipments and materials as well as various handicap equipment to be distributed for free in The Gambia.

Fab picture. The guy third from left is a friend of mine. Have just returned from Gambia and ALL the wheelchair people, bumpsters - infact anyone without a work card (including sponsored children) are being prevented from entering tourist areas by police and soldiers. So my friend struggled to get to see me (though we did meet up!).
I was appalled by the harshness of police and soldiers in keeping people away from the tourists and then furthered appalled when soldiers tried to chat me up with exactly the same line as the bumpsters use - as I've known a lot of the bumpsters for many years I prefer them to soldiers!
Another Gambia friend was prevented from going onto the beach. She and her friend wanted to go to the beach to sit and read their books (both have degrees but, as yet, not jobs). Tourist police said NO. So now we have the situation where local people do not have access to areas of their own country. (Sorry Bev to almost hijack your thread with that rant but seeing that picture sent me off!) |

Lily, I agree with you that the disabled people are very neglected in The Gambia and the political will is just not there to allow them to intigrate into able bodied society, recently I spoke to a friend of mine who has been disabled since his birth and is unable to walk or talk normally, he is also in a wheelchair and a couple of months ago was put into a lorry with several other disabled people after being taken from outside a mosque in Dippakunda and taken over to the north bank border town of Amdalye and dumped into Senegal,it took him a few days to return to his hometown of Serekunda.OK he is a beggar, but married to a disabled lady and has a 4 month old baby,no help at all is given to him,no job,a family to keep, big problem.

Toubab that story is so shocking it is disgusting!!!
Perhaps this is an area we could all help a little with?
I work with disabled children and it saddens me to think of people being treated this way.
Do disabled children in Gambia have access to education? Sporting facilities etc??? Swimming is very good for most disablities and gives people a freedom from their wheelchair for a short time. Perhaps the hotels along the coast could consider giving people access to their pools? |

It is roumored that the Jammeh Foundation for Peace has many wheelchairs, that should have been allocated after being donated,as I say rumoured. |

Toubab, Taiwan has just presented over 200 wheelchairs to JFP according to the GRTS TV news. It is no more a rumour. |

Thats good then, (Some readers of Bantaba certainly are quick to get the news out to quash rumors ) I hope all those who genuinely require a wheelchair get one, although I have to say that I understand the strength of wheelchairs from Taiwan are not really suited to the poor road and path conditions that are common in The Gambia, but hey... nor are many cars built in Europe either .not being a wheelchair user myself I probably shouldn't comment.

The lady who wants a wheelchair in Pirang is bedridden now hers has broken. So I guess that ANY wheelchair will be a big help. Even if she just gets around the compound a little. Thanks everyone for your up to date information. |
