Mr Samuel Fraunces owned the restaurant that the founding fathers of the United States used to visist and plann their independence movement.
It is said that Samuel Fraunces was a freed slave born in 1722 and died in 1795. Infact when the last British forces left the United States, the celebrations were done at this restaurant which later changed its name to Fraunces Tarvern and in New York City. Samuel bought the building in 1762 and named it Queen's Head Tavern.
George Washington held his farewell speech in 1783 to the troops when he resigned as Commander In- Chief in this very place.
Samuel later became the InnKeeper of the Executive Mansion when George washington became President in 1789. It is no coincidence that the freed slaves that went to Liberia also called their seat of government The Executive mansion.
It is very suprising how much African Americans influenced liberty and freedom in the United States. Providing his tavern to revolutionaries must be a brave move then when the British colonised the Americas. The building is still standing at the corner of Broad and Pearl streets
The building housed the departments of Treasury, Foreign Affairs and War during the days of George Washington who was a very close friend of Samuel. He eventually sold the tavern in 1785.
Thought you might need to know this.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.” |
