Pa Kelepha like M.L. Saho was one of the influential wollofs in Banjul who helped defeat Perr Njie's UP. He was also able to mobilise the Saloum Saloum behind PPP. |

Is he originally from Saloum. I lived in Saloum for 6 years and this will be good to know. I know that in Saloum, the Ceesays are dominant from PORRLI TO KAUR. There are few pockets of Tourays too and some Gayes.
It would be interesting to know of sambas in Saloum. HAY HACKUTEY |

Pa Ibrima Kelefa Samba's father among many of the people who speak Hal pulaar and wolof in saloum, Niumi and Badiba have been part of the anti-colonial army of Hama Bah commonly known as Maba Jahou Bah.
The Kelefa's grand parents lived in Genji, Balaghar and Kaur respectively.
If you take only one of the surnames, you will make a mistake. Part of the family are Jaw from Waalo stemming of the kings family of Latyr Jaw and Fara Jaw (the people commonly praised by Youssou Ndour). Maba made sure that he had people from both the religious families and the kings courts of Jolof, Baol, Saloum and the different sub-kingdoms of Fuuta Tooro.
After the establishment of the colony, many of these parents became traders and Kelefa's father was one of them.
The other part of Ibrima Kelefa Samba's family are of the Drammeh surname and the elders deed speek Sarahule at one time.
Then you have some of the Njie's (I think Bamba could remember Samba Njie Perey who used to put sugar in the wells of Kaur).
Any way, Pa Kelefa was an ally of Ibrima Garba Jahumpa in the early days and Pa Small was their mentor. They cooperated with Pierre Sarr Njie at one time but later created the Muslim Cingress through the influence of a leading Muslim Scholar from Saloum Senegal.
After the 1962 elections they rallied around Jawara and the PPP for immediate independence while the UP played a waiting game inorder to regain it's lost influence.
Kelefa Became Mayor of Banjul (the first high post he had). He later became minister in various portfolios. He's last portfolio in the PPP was, as you rightly said, National Chairman after the passing away of Pa Famara Wassa Touray. |

me,
noooo. infact i dont know where i am from. i'm sorry. both my parents were born in Banjul so were their parents. my mother might have ancestral links there, I dont know but she has relatives from northern Senegal too, on my fathers side we have relations in southern senegal.
when i was born my parents lived in the old govenment quarters in Yundum so on my passport is put Yundum as place of birth .
but i am not from Saloum. i like the way you talk about the history and i guess you also know that Maba's son , Sait Matty is buried at Sunwing Hotel in Cape Point, Bakau. the grave is just by the entrance.i have visited it several times.the main road with Bakau School is named after him
hence Bakau has too has some Saloum history. |

I lived in saloum for six years and have been to Genji wolof and Kaur (Dandeh maayo). Those were the good old days. Plenty of milk, fish, good harvest and the "LAMBAS". There used to be a very patient Driver called BAI GORREH who used to travel from Kaur to Kuntaur (KTR). This world has changed so much and so fast. |

Njucks,
When the Hotel was to be built, Mr Bittaye was the contractor and had to take permission from Imam Muhammad Lamin Bah because the man who was asigned to transfer the grave of Saer Maty was bitten by a snake after his first shovel.
They investigated and realised that it was Saer's grave, that was why Mr Bittaye took upon himself the personal responcibility to preserve the grave. |

Kondorong,
Amulaye Janneh has become more reactionary than in the PPP era when he stayed mostly inthe Greater Banjul area.
Most of the young talents have migrated. Some of the shops have been transformed to stores and the owners now stay in Greater Banjul.
You are invited next year to the Ziarra of Genji-Jimbala. I'll be there next month with a medical åproject team from europe and I shall pray for you to come and lead us to victory against Jammeh. |

I used to know one guy called Mod Jimbala. May be he is related to the man. He used to come to our house between 1977 to 1982. What a small world. He was from Genji. Well i was a small boy then. |
