Hi I am looking for some information for a friend.
What is the exchange rate at the moment against the £?
Where is the best exchange rates to be found in Gambia?
Can you change money for Dalais before you travel? Is there a limit to what you can take into the country?
I always change my money at Kotu, but my friend would like to have some currency before travelling.
In distant villages are there any money changers or do you have to travel to coast or Soma???

The rate in January was D42. Don't know exactly current rate. Changing money in UK is a big rip-off, best to change it in Gambia. Good rates at Access Bank believe or not at Brusubi or better still at exchange shop just a few doors away, he'll nearly always try to match or better the Bank! Also fairly good rate at Senegambia strip near to Ali-Babas. Hope this info is useful to you. |

I think the rate is falling - about 39 at the moment. Agree with Brufutboy - best not to exchange before going - but if your friend is nervous - change a very little - so will have a few dalassi before arrival. Best to find a pace near the coast to exchange money before traveling (in my experience). Whatever the rate at the bank you can alweays find better on the street. |

HI BEV, you can change before you go, but it is normally at the exit points, the airports or victoria train station. if possible he should just change a small amount maybe £20.00 or better still change at the banjul airport. When i sent money it was 39 dls to one pound western union. You can change money in the villages, but the rates would be what every they wanted to change. Advise your friend to have one dollar bills, or small euro notes, this can always be used in place of dls. I have changed £5.00, locally, but would not like to change anything bigger in the villages. |

Bev,I managed to get 40 Dalasi to the £ in the Gambia even though the rate advertised at most exchange bureaux was 39.This was last week. Highly unlikely that you will get 40 in the UK but good luck. I always bring at least 800 Dalasi back to the UK when I return for future use such as taxi from airport and food for a day. |
