National News : Update on the Basic Prices of Food Stuff in the Market
By Kebba Camara
02-03-10

When this reporter visited the Serrekunda market on Saturday to find out the present situation of prices of basic food commodities, he spoke with some business people and petit traders on the issue.

Some traders who sell rice and cooking oil on wholesale and retail basis explained that at the moment, the brand called ‘Saddam rice’ is D850 per bag and a cup of this brand is costing D5, whilst the others like the ‘Obama’ etc are D650 or D700 and a cup is D3.00.
They said the price of sugar now is D1180 per bag and D7.00 for the cup and that there are few people who sell a cup of sugar at D6.50.
As for palm oil, the traders engaged in it said the gallon is purchased at D100 and that they sell at D12.00 for the bigger cup and D6.00 for the smaller one. They added that at the moment palm oil is scarce and that there is the possibility for a price hike on the commodity.
On onions, the traders explained that the bag now costs them D350 and they sell at D75 per kilo and 3 onions for D10; that they buy a bag of Irish potatoes for D280 and they sell at D20 for the kilo; that tomato paste is D100 for the tin and they sell the spoon at D20 which, they said, varies.
The traders also indicated that the prices are not stable. Some of them even indicate that they believe the weight of a bag of sugar, for example, is not 50 kilos, as opposed to what is indicated on it. According to them, some bags contain only 190 cups which is less than 50 kilos or the equivalent of 200 cups.

Editor’s Note
Foroyaa is making a general follow up on prices and would do a commentary after the food commodity price monitoring exercise.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.
