This from The Point,

http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/energy-minister-impressed-with-nawec-facilities

All very good but all this stuff costs money and until Gambians have disposable income from jobs to buy cashpower meters and pay for electricity, it is going to be a long haul for NAWEC to recoup all their investment.

Madam Sirah Wally-Ndow-Njie, the minister of Energy has stated that she is very impressed with the modern facilities and structures in place at the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).

She assured that she would work towards maintaining and improving on the existing facilities and work towards achieving more. The Energy minister made these remark yesterday during an interview at the end of her tour of facilities under her ministry. She described the visit as a homecoming one, adding that it will accord her the opportunity to have first hand information about the institution and to know their constraints regarding the job, in order to ensure that they achieve the mission of Nawec fully "It is also a way of ensuring that the team working spirit that the institution is known and used to be, continues," she explained.

Minister Wally-Ndow-Njie commended the management and staff of Nawec for maintaining the high standard facilities in the company. She also echoed the Gambian leader's repeated calls for the maintenance of the facilities available within their working environment.

She then went on to speak at length on the developments that have taken place at Nawec. "If you know how Nawec was [before] and what it is today, you will know what I am talking about," she stated. She cited Kotu and Brikama power stations as examples of the rapid transformation taking place in the water and electrification sectors of the country.

She continued: "I am impressed and am comfortable with the level of facilities I have seen on the ground, I will work towards improving them and I also intend to lobby for funds to implement projects and proposals. We are also looking at ensuring one stop shop with regards to improving the Network. Despite the fact that the Venenzuelan project is moving on in that aspect. We would continue to strive for excellence and ensure that this country is all electrified."

She also called on the citizenry to join hands in order to actualise the Gambian leader's goal of transforming the country into a Silicon Valley of Africa. Minister Wally-Ndow-Njie was accompanied by a high-powered delegation including her permanent secretary, deputy permanent secretary amongst others. The team visited Nawec headquarters in Kanifing, Serrekunda water tank, Bakau Revenue, Fajara water treatment site, Kotu power station, Bijilo substation, Sukuta water treatment plant, and Brikama power station.

I was not knocking the minister only pointing out that without jobs for Gambians how can they afford to use this advantage? I am not in the inner circle of things in The Gambia so I am unaware of any active lobby work that The Minister has done. I am a great believer in the empowerment of women, who so often are more aware and capable of doing things than some men! (even though I am a bloke )
