MISSING FOR YEARS Families in Distress By Fabakary B. Ceesay 12-02-10
The family members of Mr. Momodou Lamin Nyassi, Ndongo Mboob and Buba Sanyang, all of Bwiam Village in the Foni Kansala District, have lamented over the long disappearance of their family heads that went missing almost four years ago.
The families said all the three men were picked up in April 2006 by people who claimed to be plain clothes security agents, and since then they were not seen anywhere. All these families lodged their concerns to Foroyaa on Wednesday 10 January, at their respective homes in Bwiam.
According to the family of Mr. Buba Sanyang, he was picked up at his home between the hours of 8 and 9 pm and was put on board a numberless pick up vehicle. They said one of the occupants of the vehicle came into the compound and found Sanyang under the veranda waiting for the “Aisha” prayer. They stated that the man told Sanyang that he was needed outside where the vehicle was parked. They indicated that they only saw him boarding the vehicle without saying anything to his family, that he only handed his mobile (cell) phone to one of his wives.
They noted that the vehicle left in such a hurry that they could not even notice how many occupants were in it and where exactly it headed to. The family said Buba Sanyang at the time of his arrest was the Chief Security Officer at the Sulayman Junkung Jammeh Hospital in Bwiam, and the APRC Constituency chairman and youth mobilizer within the area. They asserted that Buba Sanyang work tirelessly for the APRC party within the area. The family said he served the police force for several years during the first republic. They said they have visited most of the security installations in the country with a view to locating him but their efforts proved fruitless.
The family of the Former Chief, Momodou Lamin Nyassi lamented that they do not know the reason that triggered the long disappearance of their family head. The Nyassi family stated that their family head was picked just outside their compound while he was seeing off his friend, Ndongo Mboob within the hours of 8 and 9 pm. The family said he was picked up together with Ndongo Mboob while they were walking in the street. The family said that Nyassi was an outspoken person for the APRC party before he was appointed as the District Chief. They said he was a prominent farmer, fisherman and tailor, and also engaged in other economic ventures.
The family stated that Nyassi was removed as the area chief almost six months before he was picked up in April 2006. They indicated that they were aware that he was involved in a cattle case which was later decided by the Brikama Magistrate’s Court They said he was fined and it was paid. The family said the Court case was finished almost six months before he was abducted and taken away from them. The family said they visited almost all the Police Stations, Police Headquarters in Banjul, and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Headquarters in Banjul, Mile 2 Central Prison and Janjangbureh Prison. They said the response from the authorities was always negative. They noted that they could not get any positive answer from the authorities regarding his place of detention since April 2006.
The family of Mr. Ndongo Mboob expressed the same feelings about the long disappearance of their family head. They said Ndongo was the District Coordinator of the ruling APRC party and was always at the forefront of APRC activities within the area. They said he was abducted together with former Chief Nyassi while he was from the latter’s home at night shortly before “Aisha” prayer. They said they never set their eyes on him since that night and have never heard from him. They expressed their frustration over the long disappearance of their family head. They said they could not attribute Ndongo’s problem to anything, for he has never been implicated or involved in any problem either with the State or any individual person.
Editor’s Note We will give an update of the detentions without trial and the disappearances so that the state will see the need to investigate the claims and address them accordingly
