Foroyaa Editorial: ARE THE SOVEREIGN GAMBIAN PEOPLE AWAKE? PREPARATION By Publisher
The APRC is the ruling party and it is doing everything to carry out a campaign by the television, Religious ceremonies, Traditional ceremonies, Cultural ceremonies, Treatment ceremonies, Fund raising activities and musical jamborees, which are all being used to draw the crowd to display mass support. The Government is doing everything to show that it has popular support.
The IEC is also struggling to put its house in order. It has to conduct registration of voters in 2011. It must also conduct Presidential and National Assembly elections. A biometric system of issuing ID cards is being put in place. How long it would take to issue approximately700000 (seven hundred thousand) Gambians with ID Card and eventually voters’ cards should be high in the agenda.
Top on the agenda is the need to redraw constituency boundaries after the 2001 amendment of the constitution. The Executive has convinced the National Assembly to amend the constitution and make provision for a constituency Boundaries Commission. This Commission has never been constituted. The Independent Electoral Commission needs to raise this with the Government so that the mechanisms could be put in place right away to redraw the constituency boundaries in 2010 so that that would be out of the way and could be effective in the next registration of voters.
The opposition forces are also coming up. We have reliably learnt that PDOIS is to hold a congress in April which will coincide with Republican Day, UDP is also said to be planning to hold a congress, NRP is also said to be planning to hold a congress. There is discussion within the ranks of the NCP for a way forward.
Agenda 2011 is also inspiring a Sovereign National Debate for a way forward for Democratic change in the country. Foroyaa is receiving tons of letters on this debate. Hence we shall open up a column for a debate on the pros and cons on the agenda. We suggest that those who write use a language that will enable the Gambian people to be able to have a balanced perspective so that they would be able to make an informed choice on the way forward.
We wish to take this opportunity to advise the National mobiliser of the APRC to prepare himself for an intellectual debate on the future of the country. Foroyaa will be open to publish divergent views. The great battle for the hearts and minds of the people has begun. Are the sovereign Gambian people awake to decide what is in their interest or are they going to allow themselves to be victims of inducement, intimidation or prejudices? The future will tell. THE only time opposition parties expect doing any better in Gambia is to refuse Yaya Jammeh take part with them. The fellow will do anything just to emerge with numbers. Of course that does not mean POPULARITY.
Gambian opposition needs to wake up much the same way it has been suggested from this Foroyaa publication.
There is lot more wrong with the opposition than all that is wrong with Yaya Jammeh, discounting his firmented cruelty. |

Foroyaa Editorial : President’s Fund Versus Government Funds under http://www.foroyaa.gm/modules/news/article.php?storyid=4484
QUOTES FROM THE WAY FORWARD-HALIFA SALLAH under http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8158 "Agenda 2011 will be consolidating a culture of the sovereignty of the people. In 2011 these two forces will be locked in the most intense electoral combat that this country has ever known. We will carry out our own in a sophisticated, refined, enlightened and decent manner. I challenge him to turn his eyes away from all other forces and focus on this rejuvenated force which he is to confront in 2011.Let him try to march our sophistication, enlightenment, and decency and leave the people to be the final judge. History has started to put its pen on paper. The clock for the 2011 race has already started to tick. All those who have interest in the race should begin to take their position whether they are going to support the culture of the coup or the culture of the sovereignty of the people. They should all be ready to put their energy, money and mind where their hearts lay. The side which will triumph will depend on the side the overwhelming majority of the people decide to support. The people of a country will teach the world who they are by the type of agenda they support.
History will finally say what type of people the Gambian people are. We hope each of us will be absolved by History. The future will certainly tell."
QUOTED from The Point Newspaper: "Mr. Sallah's style of politics is different from that of his opponents. He focuses in enlightening the people so that they can make an enlightened and informed choice."
WHEN WILL YOU BE AWAKE FOR THE GAMBIA OUR HOMELAND THAT ALL MAY LIVE IN PEACE AND UNITY
