WORK ON THE MANDINABA –SOMA HIGHWAY STOPS WHAT WENT WRONG?
By Publisher

In a recent visit that necessitated traveling along the Mandinaba Soma highway, which is under construction by the Kharafi and Son Company, this reporter discovered that work on this particular road has come an abrupt halt.

This reporter spoke to some workers who claimed that work has stopped and that they are daily wage workers and any day they failed to work, they will not be paid.
According to workers who spoke to this reporter, the consultancy firm (UNITECH) and the Construction Company (Kharafi and Sons) are the parties that are responsible for progress in the work at the site. The workers said they do not see the equipment and personnel of UNITECH at the work site and that construction work has since not been taking place. They would want this reporter to find out why.
The workers are very concerned that if the authorities do not solve the problem as soon as possible they would suffer a great deal since they would not be paid.

Editor’s Note
The President has removed Lamin Bojang and has transferred the Works portfolio under his control. March is just around the corner and the rainy season is not far off. Foroyaa will contact UNITECH and Kharafi and Sons to confirm whether or not UNITECH has indeed withdrawn its equipment and personnel and whether that is the problem which is causing a delay in the construction process.

Work on the Soma-Mandinaba Road Stops UNETEC Consultancy Firm Explains
By Isatou Bittaye
12-02-10

It was reported in the Foroyaa issue No16/2010 that work at the Soma-Mandinaba highway has come to an abrupt halt. This is what necessitated this reporter to contact the authorities responsible for the construction of the said road to know what went wrong.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, the Project Manager of UNETEC Consultancy firm Mr. Mahmoud Altawil said their contract has been terminated by the Ministry of Works, Construction and Infrastructure. He said UNETEC was a consultant to M.A Kharafi & Sons Construction Company and was responsible for the construction of the said road. He disclosed that they received their termination letter on 21st December 2009 and were asked to hand over all the materials which they did and are no more in charge of the said highway.
Mr. Mahmoud noted that since their contract was terminated, they stopped work on the said road and that the Ministry is now in charge of the work but not them. He said the Roads Authorities identified some problems on the road which they (UNETEC) rejected and that resulted in the termination of the contract.
When this reporter visited the construction company (M.A Kharafi & Sons), she met the Private Secretary to the Area Manager who told her that they don’t have any thing to say on this issue because they are just employees. She referred this reporter to go to the Ministry of Works, noting that Kharafi & Sons cannot grant any interview to her because they don’t have anything to say.
At the Ministry of Works, Construction and Infrastructure, she was referred to the National Roads Authority. When she visited the Roads Authority the Secretary to the Managing Director told her that they have Acting Managing Director who is in U.K and she should go back after three weeks because no one at the office can speak to her without authorization from the Acting Managing Director. This reporter will contact the Managing Director.
