How can you drink attaya, onjo, baobab, ginger without sugar ! this is going to have a big impact on many petty businesses. Are sugar wholesalers making a big profit or is there a genuine shortage ? Any member who is in Gambia got any information?
This from The Point:
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/price-of-sugar-hikes-again
Price of sugar hikes again! africa » gambia Tuesday, 26 January 2010 We have been reliably informed that the price of sugar is on the hike again, following the recent increment of one of the country's basic commodities.
The rate at which the price of sugar escalates, no doubt, sour living for average Gambian.
It is unimaginable to think that the price of a cup of sugar would just within a period of one month inflate from D5.00 to D6.00, D7.00 or D8.00.
This is unacceptable and needs urgent intervention by means of price control mechanism to control the escalating prices of essential commodities.
We call on the regulatory authorities to, without delay, interveneto protect the interest of the consumers.
In The Gambia, sugar is one of the essential commodities that every household demand on a daily basis to survive, no matter what.
We, therefore, urge the government to intervene in order to address this problem. During the past two weeks people have been calling our office to do something about it before it is too late.
Though we are not the right authority to address the matter, we can use the power of the media to raise alarm on this pinching situation.
While we urge the government, businessmen and other relevant stakeholders to ponder over the issue, we also implore on people to check on their consumption pattern.
In the same vein, we call on those business people who are in the habit of hoarding goods to desist from the practice as soon as possible.

Actually, Wonjo & Ginga are my favorite.
The demand for sugar is very high in the Gambia.
In the village for example, you can use it with porridge (mix of coos, rice, etc..), milk (sour), Chereh, etc...
The attaya drinkers must be ready to stage a rally...to request for a re-dress.
Any ways, Jokes aside, a government that is responsible must be willing to subsidise basic commodities. Though, I will agree that sugar consumption should be well planned.

2bab,
no. You are not alone. It's winter you know.
school. work. chores. etc...
I enjoy threads on social issues a lot, more than I do with politics. Matter of fact, I just default to politics here, and there, but I don't belong there.

Attaya without sugar would be unthinkable but why do some people put those menthol pastilles into the attaya??? That really doesn't taste good to me!
And, light hearteded aside - yes, I think government should be helping more with basics. |

The Menthol pastiles (they come from Senegal) are supposed to have medicinal properties to act a bit like a tonic, also some folks add mint to attaya just to vary the taste I guess, because "normal" attaya can sometimes taste a little bitter even with loads of sugar! |

2bab & Lily,
Attaya without sugar is un-imaginable, for real. I am only a part-time drinker when I am hanging-out with friends. Simple reason is just lack of time because it is very addictive. Though, if I don't have my coffee, be certain, things will not roll well for the day...ha ha ha...
anyways, great week ahead, and enjoy your weekends too with your lovely families, especially in these horrible un-forgiving cold winters.
