Governor Challenges Local Authorities By Omar Sabally
The Governor of Western Region Mr. Lamin Sanneh has thrown a challenge to the local government authorities to register strangers residing in their jurisdiction.
He equally challenged landlords to ensure that foreigners leaving in their yards are registered with the Alkalos and Chiefs and then report to the Immigration Department. Governor Sanneh urged adherence to this because strangers have started abusing our Gambian hospitality and our Maslaha syndrome, which according to him is causing harm to the country.
He stated that in 2009, people experienced a lot of incidents in the Gambia, ranging from murder, rape, and automobile accidents, among others, which he said should be our major concerns to ensure that people make a stop to this acts. He added that from lessons learnt in 2009, there is need to ensure that every stranger is registered with the Alkalos and to determine their age and mission.
He also referred to “certain unscrupulous elements” who will be renting in our compounds but will be sleeping throughout the day and by night they disappear without landlords knowing their operations or the kind of jobs the person is engaged in. He also said that there are individuals driving expensive cars and doing so many things that are beyond his imagination. “And those kinds of people,” the Governor said, “should be screened to know what they are doing and landlords should ensure that their tenants are monitored so that malpractices are controlled.”
Mr. Sanneh made this statement in an interview with our reporter at his office in Brikama last Friday. Turning to the issue of land disputes, Governor Sanneh said it is still an issue in Brikama and the Western Region, wherein people eager to get money over night start doing so many dubious things which cannot be sustained if you don’t have the means. It means you have to engage in illegally ways of getting money.
He pointed out that other people venture into this land grabbing, selling and other illegal acquisitions, noting that those issues should be looked into carefully, especially at the local level where we have the Kabillo heads, Alkalos, and Chiefs “because land is an asset that needs to be preserved for future generations. “Otherwise if all is sold-out, it will turn into a different issue”. Governor Sanneh therefore urged that the private sector, Government and NGOs should look into this and make sure that there is preservation of land in Western Region in particular.
Turning to the issue of drug abuse, Governor Sanneh said health wise, it’s not good, “and this drug has brought a lot of frustration to most of the youths”, noting that most of the victims have become a nuisance in society as a result of drug abuse. He finally urged youths in the country to avoid drug abuse and illegal migration.
