That is, indeed, excellent news.
I wasn't aware that the Japanese had an internatinal project in the Gambia (fishing I know about!). Good for them as I know they have enough problems at home right now.

That is great news for Gambia!

But I heard on the news today that many parts of Japan have had no aid since the earthquake.
Their own people are in need. Once the news stories move on then people are forgotten.

Well done everybody who has had an influence in solving this serious problem ,although the workers who drilled the borehole should not be forgotten ,neither should those who worked in the background to make the project come about .

Is it now these APRC folks are realising the plight of Ndowen? Its now about scoring political points. After all, there is already an ongoing JICA (Japanish International Cooperation Agency) water project in the village. See my posting on 14 Jul 2011 above.

Ndowen village gets borehole
By Lamin SM Jawo in CRR
Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Members of the Niani district tribunal and the APRC executive committee on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 witnessed the drilling of a borehole at Ndowen village in CRR north. The project is being funded by the government of The Gambia in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

The main contractor for the drilling works is ASCON, LDA of Senegal. Speaking at the drilling site, the National Assembly member of Niani, Hon Ebrima Manneh, said the development marked an important milestone in the history of Ndowen village. He noted that the government of the Gambia under the able leadership of President Jammeh makes the development of the rural people a top priority in his development agenda and that the drilling of the borehole is a manifestation of that reality.

Alhaji Pierre Bah, chief of Niani district, commended the Department of Water Resources and Islamic Development Bank for the benevolent gesture.Noting the importance of the project, Bah said it would go a long way in reducing the hardship of the women, who spend hours searching for water. He said provision of clean and safe drinking water reduces the risk and incidence of water-borne diseases such as cholera.

The representative of the Department of Water Resource, Yaya Jobe, said the drilling of a borehole in Ndowen is in support of government’s effort to dig 100 drilled wells with hand pumps and boreholes across the country, out of which 20 would be in CRR north.

He called on the beneficiaries to maintain the facility properly to ensure its durability. He asserted that it is crucial for them to establish water management committee for the sustainable maintenance of the facility and be transparent in the management of the facility.

The APRC regional chairperson, Alhaji Baboucarr Jobe; constituency chairperson Alhaji Malick Secka; ward councilor, Alhagie Sarge all remarked that once the facility is handed over to the community, the beneficiaries must take full responsibility and ownership.

That's great news, would have been even better if this had been done when before the rains came ! Ah well ,Governments are all the same, delays due to funding problems,I hope that the villagers heed what the APRC said" The APRC regional chairperson, Alhaji Baboucarr Jobe; constituency chairperson Alhaji Malick Secka; ward councilor, Alhagie Sarge all remarked that once the facility is handed over to the community, the beneficiaries must take full responsibility and ownership." In other words if you "fiddle" or interfere with the installation YOU will have to pay for what you have done NOT the government, its your business to see that it keeps working well,(no pun intended ) as the government will NOT pay to fix it.That's fair you break it you fix it with YOUR money.

Nothing new for Ndowen since last summer

WATER SITUATION IN NDOWEN THE SAME BUT…

By Abdoulie G. Dibba
22-02-12

Ndowen, a village in Niani District in the Central River Region of the Gambia , with a cattle population of over 2000 heads and a large number of ruminants, has been suffering from the scarcity of water to the point of going to Senegal to get this life sustaining basic necessity.

Readers would recall that this reporter did raise the concerns of the people of Ndowen with the Governor of the Central River Region Ngangie Touray on 18th March 2010, at his residence in Janjangbureh. He noted that the water issue in Ndowen has been a long standing problem dating far back in the first Republic and that it would soon be history. Two years have almost elapsed and this reporter went back to the village to review the situation and further talked to the governor.
The water situation in Ndowen Village is the same. Though a borehole was drilled in August 2011 there is no installation of pipes and solar panel to make the borehole operational.

This reporter recalls an interview with Governor Touray in March 2010. He asserted then that Ndowen was going to benefit from a water project that will provide a borehole with a solar panel that will ensure the flow of water from the bore hole to the tank and finally to the standpipes. He added that the manual form of drawing water from wells in Ndowen would soon be history, not to talk of going to Senegal to buy water.
Responding to question on how soon is soon, Governor Touray told this reporter that a workshop would be held in a week's time after which a drilling team will start work in Ndowen because of the urgency for the village to have water. Governor Touray even said that the villagers have to pay D25,000 (Twenty-five thousand Dalasi) which will be deposited in a bank as the village account. In case of any breakdown of the equipment the villagers will just withdraw from the account and do the necessary repairs. He concluded then by saying that the Government is concerned about the plight of the Gambian people and will do everything possible to address their needs and aspirations.
This reporter visited the Village on the 6th of February 2012 to find out the situation and according to the villagers, their demand for water is could not be more urgent than ever as the only existing well in the village is drying up, thus compelling them to go all the way to Kerr Mandumbeh in Senegal to buy water for their domestic consumption.
According to the Villagers who spoke to this reporter, the drilling of the borehole started on the 16th of August 2011 and that as of now, the drilling is completed but cannot enjoy clean drinking water as the work is not complete.
When contacted on Wednesday the 8th of February 2012 on the issue, Governor Nganyie Touray asserted that the Ndowen Water project is in progress and that though drilling has already been completed the contractors will be moving to the next stage, that is, the laying of the pipes. After the laying of the pipes, the solar panels will be installed and then Ndowen will start to enjoy clean drinking water.
When asked how soon that would that be, Governor Touray said he could not give a specific date because it is a project and it progresses according to stages.
Note:- The project is being funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in collaboration with the government of The Gambia.
