folks, with the recent developments relative to posting in this thread, it appears the arrests are more to do with financial crimes than an attempted coup. By all indiations an alledged coupist would not be demoted and dismissed and asked to walk the streets scot-free.
And i understand two or more businessmen are involved in the arrests namely, kebba touray and lie joof both of tobacco road banjul.
I may eat my words back, but i dont see any military coup succeeding in the near future. Until i see any credible lead, i will treat these arrests as economic rather than security ones.

Certainly financial/economic reasons are a huge factor, but it could as well be a combination of that with military/security reasons... Nobody is saying that there will be a successful coup in the Gambia, but I bet you didn't see the coup of 1994 coming either, did you? |

Kay,
I was just reacting to the whirlwind of coup rumours in one or two forums online. These rumours maybe wishes further fuelled by the high profile military arrests. anyone following the sequence of events since the uneexpected sacking of the CDS Tamba and others senior officers, shouldnt be surprised of these arrests as investigations continue.
I didnt expect to see the coup in 1994, which by the way found me abroad. But becos of my contacts in the army then(family and friends) i knew there was discontent which could spill-over. The veterans of the liberian war were the larger part of the discontented group. I wasnt the least surprised, though it happened rather out of the blue.
It was well received as you and i may know that genearlly gambians were tired of the PPP regime and any relief was good. There are many people venting their anger and frustration, though many of them were barely born before Jammeh and co came to power in 1994, hence their blurred judgement.
As it is today the army has been transformed significantly by Jammeh in terms of welfare and opportunities. Before 1994 even a captain's salary was a joke. Today even sgts salary is respectable compared to pre-94 and compared to their peers in the civil service.
If jammeh is cracking down on corruption in the army , it is move in the right direction, infact it must be applauded. A corrupt armed forces is a recipe for total disaster as can be seen in Guinea bissau, conakry and latin america, where they connived with drug barons to wreck havoc. I was disappointed with the conduct of two senior army officers, one of whom is already sacked for economic crimes and the other is yet to land in the net. When i learnt of their coruption i was sadden. Becos these guys were enjoying by gambian standard yet they were involved in misappropriation of funds.
Anyway i believe that it would take a really bad situation for the Army to turn against one of their own(Jammeh) and as a benefactor to them largely.
It is my wish for for Jammeh to be engaged in non-violent way in other to bring about a better change. Confrontation only begets violence. I also pray Jammeh sees the wisdom in not overstaying in power, which would only be bad for him. |

| It is just hilarious how the minds of the online conspiracy theorists and their sacrosanct sources in high places work. How can you pitch together some of the alleged arrested and jailed(some of whom would rather shoot each other than sit on the same table) and have a coup is mind boggling. Even the more hilarious considering Mr Badara Mbye of Africel, supposively locked up in Mile 2 was yesterday being lavished praises by the Sheikh after Jammeh received a gift of a telepromter from him. Even on the list we now have Rambo, Commando and a squadron of Delta Force. Brilliant!!! And the Sheikh is so stupid he can't distinguish his arse from his mouth but he ruled over the wise and prudent for over 15 years and continue to do so, while they strategise, complot and shriek under their beds. One has to wonder 'what is the difference between the wise and the fool, when the wise live and die like wiser fools?' We really need God's mercy. |

Why is it 'most unwelcoming news'? Jammeh did a similar unconstitutional (coup) operation, undermined his comrades to consolidate himself in power, did good things, rape the nation, committed astrocities and failed in certain areas
Its most unwelcoming cos the Gambia is well beyond 1981 and 1994. Jammeh was an angel sent to us when is was well overdue and it was very appreciated by most of us. Now the need for a potential blood bad in the Gambia is what is most unwelcoming. All this attempted coups (Rumour or Fact) can really lead to some very heavy price to be paid by Gambia. So I really hope nothing like that will happen. Jammeh is doing fine by our counts and comparison.

If abuse of power exist, corruption, suspected state terrorism (i.e. arbitary arrests, detentions, maiming of The Constitution and extra-judicious acitivities) and civility fails, coup is last resort for radical changes to restore peace and stabilty! |

Man, these are very worrying remarks. Jammeh being soldier makes him totally unfit for the job of president. He was never (never, never, never) invited to take up role of president or leader. He raped the situation, destroying the virgin democratic civilian governance of Gambia.
Once and for ever, get this one clear. Jammeh was not invited and his overstay will only jeopardise him more as he refuses to step down. He will end up battering his own trusted men and women. It has been long time since I have made it known, my concern that Jammeh and his club members would fall apart. That is now happening. Now I dare warn you that if Jammeh insists on staying to bring more havoc on people, he will end up not enjoying it. Don't take it if you don't believe it. Jammeh needs knowing by now that the thick smoke is advancing towards fierce burning flames. |
