As I read the Gambian papers today, there is a lot of talk about a "foiled coup" uncovered by the Gambian Police lead by Ensa Badgie (Jesus-a fierce supporter of President Jammeh)involving Gen. Lang Tombong Tamba, the former Chief of Defence Staff; Yankuba Touray, former Fisheries Minister, and Edward Sighateh, former military Vice Chair of AFPRC government.
All three are reportedly arrested and detained at Mile Two Central prisons together with some alleged civilian conspirators such as Amadou Sambia, a business tycoon close to President Jammeh.
Meanwhile, Colonel Kawsu Kamara, a notorious torturer and killer of opponents of the APRC government have been reportedly sacked from the army. That certainly is good news, but I am still tempted to ask: what is going on in the Gambia?

Interesting but nevertheless very worrying developments Kay. This complot net is even wider than the Ndure Cham foiled coup if the rumours are anything to by. How they are managing to pitch together known sworn enemies from different camps in this conspiracy makes it even the more bewildering. To add to all this confusion, Kukoi's alleged private letter in French to President Wade had been splashed all over today's Observer. I can't wait to see how this one unravel. Hope it all end in peace.

Kay,

There are more sleeves to roll. "Ning borro mang meh......."

Coming times will have more to reveal. Those who thought it was part of wisdom to join the cheat club will soon find tough bones stuck in their gullet. Sit and watch the drama. Another twist of witch hunting. The whole fiasco will spell a domino effect.

These are very turbulent times.... I guess they were right in saying that "there's is no honor among thieves."

The professor is very brave. If the rumors are true, and the learned prof. successfully pull this move, then his is surely going to reign for ages...

Absolutely true. This especially hits so close to home. The arrestees and detainees in this case are all, until recently, very close to Presdent Jammeh and they are all powerful men in their own rights: military heavyweights, General Tamba and Colonel Kawsu Camara; former cabinet ministers Capt. Touray and Capt. Sighateh; business moguls Amadou Samba and Gaye...
But the most worrying aspect of this alleged "foiled coup" and subsequent security sweep is that President Jammeh seems to have relied on the police under the Inspector General Ensa Badgie (commonly called Jesus) to quell an impending army plot by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Tamba. This could be an indication of President Jammeh's growing alienation from the army. Jammeh's reliance on the police and Inspector Badgie to muzzle the military is not likely to maintain the loyalty of the army. This action by Jammeh appears to be similar to the former president Jawara's use of the Senegalese-style Gendermerie and later Nigerian soldiers to keep the Gambian army at bay.
Erecting this kind of wall between the State House and the barracks will only further disgruntled the army, especially the junior officers and rally them around the protection of their military interests and identity. This military interests and identity, often dubbed 'army reasons', have been identified by political scholars (Samuel Decalo) as referenced in Dr. Saine's paper on 'The military Coup in the Gambia', 1995; as one of the major factors for military coups in Africa. Therefore, Jammeh's relation with the army is crucial to his continuity in power, firstly because Jammeh is a military leader and no amount of civilian clothes can transform him into a civilian leader; secondly, there is a sense of feeling within the army that President Jammeh owes them everything for his dramatic rags-to-riches ascension to power.
Jammeh's failure to keep his promises and obligations to the army, his most important constituency, could be disastrous to his regime. The end may not be far away afterall...

sources please folk. This seems to be a most unwelcoming news only circulating in europe. I know that igp badjie himself is under arrest. So it seems a little contrdictory

Bread man,

Some point in time, it was my allusion that you know more things behind the thick curtains than the rest of us. I am pleased with your sincerity and and readiness to share.

What, Jesus arrested? Then who is safe? Thank you for kindly sharing.

Bread man's definitely been over-buttered. Too much butter is not good for you health. BTW Bread man, sources are abound, and you'll definetely not get it from Jammeh Kunda. Raise your head in pride, or bury your head in the sand in shame. Your choice............lol!

Why is it 'most unwelcoming news'? Jammeh did a similar unconstitutional (coup) operation, undermined his comrades to consolidate himself in power, did good things, rape the nation, committed astrocities and failed in certain areas

Gambians are naive to discuss about Kukoi Samba's coup, Jammeh's coup and getting rid of Jammeh by coup! It was Kukoi Samba's coup that made Jammeh, so don't be surprise to see these cycle of events

The nation belong to all of us and not Jammeh! The soldiers need to wake-up and realised who they owe 'allegiance' ; i,e. allegiance to the state or Jammeh

Well, if Jesus himself is under arrest, then that is a very very good news. I personally think his arrest is long overdue...

Its most unwelcoming cos the Gambia is well beyond 1981 and 1994. Jammeh was an angel sent to us when is was well overdue and it was very appreciated by most of us. Now the need for a potential blood bad in the Gambia is what is most unwelcoming. All this attempted coups (Rumour or Fact) can really lead to some very heavy price to be paid by Gambia. So I really hope nothing like that will happen. Jammeh is doing fine by our counts and comparison.

Of course "Jammeh is doing fine by" your "counts and comparison". That is what Tamba and the other arrestees also thought until now.
They had their 'Bread' perhaps just like you ( Breadman), but for thousands of Gambians who have no 'bread' on their table, it is a different story.
Do you know that more than half of the Gambian electorate either voted against Jammeh (APRC) or did not bother at all to go out to the polls in the last presidential election? Do you know what that means for Jammeh's legitimacy? I do not need to mention the constitutional and human rights crisis in the Gambia...

Kay,
Since Jammeh took over power I have attended all subsequent elections in the Gambia and all were free and fair. This is just your refusal to Jammeh´s legitimacy. The Gambia have never enjoyed such voter turnout as it did during these elections. LookMan, Jammeh is a soldier and as such all these ranting about his humanright records does not fit in with his military training. When Jammeh is gone the next that comes can follow humanright and rule of law and bury us all in bunches of paper for more 5year development programs that never brought development. Jawara style!!!!

It is the mark of intelligence to entertain an idea without accepting it.

So you think the lack of human and civil rights in the Gambia is a legitimate price for the false development under APRC? What do you call development? Constructing grandiose structures that can be used by only one percent of the population is no development! Real development does not dehumanize the people. Real development enhances the "liberty, dignity and the prosperity" of the majority of the population. Real development does not sacrifice human and civil rights, instead it improves them...
