College Students Help Harvest Jammeh's Farm
By Ebrima Bah
"Students from the Gambia College last Saturday embarked on a day-long harvesting exercise on the Kanilai Rice Fields belonging to the President of the Gambia,in response to the call he made for the people of the Gambia to assist him.
At the farm in Kanilai, the College students’ body which was led by the President of the Gambia College Students’ Union (GCSU) unwaveringly worked to the end until the closure of the gap left between them and the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) staff on the one hand, and National Patriotic Students’ Association (NAPSA) and other volunteers on the other, who were all out in their gears to help the President.
Speaking to this reporter, Ebrima Bah, President of the Gambia College Students’ Union (GCSU) said that it was not difficult for him to mobilize the students because each and every one of them knew the importance of the exercise. He observed that the work that needs to be done at the Kanilai farms is too much to be undertaken and accomplished by only a few individuals. Harvesting exercise, he said is something that needs urgent response, and these are some of the reasons why we decided to make our first rush during the harvesting time.
According to him, the arrangement by the executive of the Students’ Union was not limited to any one school of the Gambia College but “equal opportunity was given to students from the Schools of Education, Agriculture, Public Health and Nursing and Midwifery”, he said.
In a related development, Hon. Seedy Njie, nominated member of the National Assembly who is the NAPSA coordinator told this reporter at their rest point in Kanilai that he went with schools within the Foni areas of Mayok Senior Secondary, Fatima Senior Secondary, Bwiam Upper Basic and Sangajorr Upper Basic.
The help, he said is borne out of the “fact that any thing generated from the Kanilai Farms goes to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace in order to help the needy and deserving, especially students and youths"."
