Foroyaa Editorial : Additional 344.8 Million Dalasis Requested to Finance Government Expenditure
The money required for providing services to people in the Gambia comes from the people themselves. This is why the Minister of Finance is given the responsibility to prepare a budget annually and present the estimates of what is needed to run all state institutions to the National Assembly for approval.
The sum which has been authorised to be removed from the consolidated fund to finance the expenditures of the Ministry of Education; Health and Social Welfare; Agriculture; Works, Construction and Infrastructure; Defence; The Interior; Justice; Foreign Afffairs; Youth and Sports; Forestry and Environment; Communication, Information and Information Technology; Fisheries and Water Resources; Energy; Tourism and Culture; Finance and Economic Affairs; etc amounts to three billion, ninety five million, nine hundred and eighty seven thousand, nine hundred and thirteen dalasis (D3,095,987,913)
It is now four months before the end of the financial year and the Minister of Finance had laid estimates amounting to 344 .8 million dalasis before the National Assembly for approval so that it could be utilised as additional funds to meet the budgetary requirements of the Government.
D30 million is added to the sum of D217 million which was originally allocated to the Office of President; D50 million is added to the sum of D169 miilion which was originally allocated to the Ministry of defence; D78 million is added to the the sum of D212 million which was originally allocated to the Ministry of the Interior ; D14 million is added to the sum of D281 million which was originally allocated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; D38 million is added to the sum of D251 million which was originally allocated to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs; D50 million is added to the sum of D222m which was originally allocated to Miscellaneous and D 84 million is added to the sum of D101.5 million dalasis which was originally allocated to the Ministry of Works, Communication and Infrastructure.
It should now be clear to the Gambian people that all public servants and the members of the disciplined force are paid form National coffers. Any promotions or provision of employment must come with revenue generation. Government transports are also purchased from the consolidated fund.
Gambians should therefore keep track of all expenditures and ask themselves whether they are in agreement with the ways and means of utilizing their funds.
Public funds do not drop from the sky. It comes from the pockets of the people, who are entitled to know how it is spent on their behalf. Source: Foroyaa Online
