Recently during my vacation, one of my children contracted malaria and was treated with a new (?) medicine called Coartem. The treatment took only 3 days. This medicine is distributed free of charge at clinics and the hospital but costs 500Dalasis at the pharmacies.

We have had a very positive experience because our child started playing around as usual just after 2˝ days treatment.

I have made some search on the internet and could see that Coartem contains ingredients from the plant mentioned in the link at:

Sab, whats your take on this medicine?

Very good research Momodou, those people from scotland get everywhere even York University in England,God bless Gordon Brown again,The new drug obviously works from your own personal experience,I am happy that it did the job for your daughter, would the clinic give out this drug to anybody who went there or only Gambians.Others perhaps being told go to the pharmacy and spend D500!

Toubab, I doubt if they will discriminate you when you are ill. I think the funding is from WHO which your own country is part of.

Snippet:
To ensure broad access to Coartem, Novartis forged a partnership, with the World Health Organization to provide Coartem at no profit for use by public health systems in developing countries. In their agreement signed in 2001, Novartis and the WHO estimated that demand for Coartem might exceed 2 million treatments within five years....

...“Patients know Coartem is effective and can cure malaria in three days. Frequently they have already used the drug to treat a family member or themselves,” says Silvio Gabriel, Executive Vice President Malaria Initiatives at Novartis. “But too often, when they go to a clinic or health facility, no Coartem is available. So improving drug management must be a priority for countries. If Coartem doesn’t reach patients, it can’t cure them.”....

Thanks that appears clear enough.
