I am a big critic of Jawara and can never ever forgive him for the state of Affairs of the past and present Gambia. I think it is an insult to compare the two and by default Jammeh appears better simply not because of his records, but because of his lack of knowledge, experience, control and worst of all his sense of left and right as compared to Jawara. Jammeh's intellectual IQ is below human capacity if you can execuse my language. For old Pa, so sad, what a human waste; but at least he had a system of government where there was continuity in administration. However,he systematically ruined what we had and was proud of day in and day out until he ran away. He was a myth hiding behind Mr. nice guy and he could not kill an ant much more fire people destroying our nation.
For Jammeh, how can anyone blame him? What you see is what you get period. Hate him, call him whatever you want, but the man does not know left and right. I can guarantee you that 3/4 of the daily attrocities committed in the Gambia, the man don't have a clue who is commander X and Y. There is one thing to have a chain of command and another thing for individual camps to take control of a broken command. Gambia can only be equated to many years of non central government in Somalia. The only diffence is that we have a group of people in control of the money to spend anyway they want.
I can go on and on, but I think it is not fair for us to have to compare between these two. May be we can evaluate cause and effect and conclude who is more to blame for where we are today? Jawara is definitely responsible for keeping us so ignorant for so long, that we could not get anything but Jammeh. It is a chapter in our history that we would want to forget and not have to think about ever. Peace

Are you blinded by the infrastructural developments jammeh ushered in. Jawara kept us in the dark. I think education is key to life. I think junkung needs to improve his public relations and human rights record. If he could be a little bit humbled, then he will automatically overtake Jawara.
His biggest monster is is not letting people make choices for themselves and which include but not limited to free speech, assemly, and a free press.
Unfortunately they both have my thumbs down.
Kons There is no doubt that Jawara regime has many weaknesses and failures but that era attained the "benchmark" for rectification, progress and further development of the nation. When that regime was toppled through a bloodless coup as people welcome a revolution for a change of government as long overdue because of the hardships, rampant corruption, mafia and stagnant economy or nation. However one needs to appreciate that when Jawara had B.B. Darboe on board he attempted to handle Government business with patriotism and professionalism because he develope the Education Polcy, Cultural policy, Youth Policy, Sports Development Polcy, Tourism polcy inter alias and that was recognized to accord him a potfolio during the transitional government aftermath of the coup.
By the time the junta took the reigns of government from Jawara they inherited a very comprehensive project consultancy and proposals covering a wide sphere of development projects for Gambia including The TV, University amongst others. At that time a UNDP Representative Dr. Angelio dictated sponsoring the consultancy for economic recovery and moving Gambia forward; and a bottom up approach was implemented and the community were sensitized to forward their priorities through the municipalities to central government. A large data bank existed and already marketed to World Bank, IMF etc. When there were snctions by the British and U.S the world bank announced that they would provide the millions already approved for Gambians irrespective of which Government of the day exist just after six months.
Another reasoning would be that Gamtel was pioneered by Jawara's regime and you would reckon that technology advance faster during Jammeh's era than Jawara's and that contibutes to improvement of communications. Ajaratou Isatou Njie Saidy is vey conversant with most of the projects being implemented as she served U.N.D.P during Dr. Angelio's tenure. That's why her expertise is exploited by Jammeh.
Finally as that era was where the standards began we expect Jammeh to develope them further but most of our concerns are on lack of transparency, accountability, human rights abuse and more rampant corruption which they advocated as justifications for the coup and they step in to rectify and eradicate them!
Therefore judge them on good governance, peace, progress, stabilty, statesmanship, diplomacy, human rights records, democracy, economy, law & order, inter alias and not only on infrastructures. |

Babygirl, but if they do we may never know! If I remember correctly you were around in 1981 coup? You know much. To be unconcerned is dangerous.
The great lesson of our time is that no regime can survive if it acts above the heads of the ordinary citizens of the country/mandela. |

The question is interesting but i am not sure people are going about this in the right way. First of all, it is difficult to choose between two evils. It is difficult for instance to choose between josehp Stalin Mao or hitlar. They were all mass murderers and at some point, when they all riched in the tens of millions of kills, the count ceesed to matter.
On Jammeh and Jawara, they have both hurt the gambian people so much that it does not matter much anymore. Many people seem to have this notion that jawara was kinder. this is far from the truth. People were arrested and yes totured and sometimes killed. Just like jammeh, many people dissapered after the 1981 coupA lot were killed by the senegalese forces without justification. The open secret is that senegalese troups under jawaras invition carried many summary executions of civilians. It is also the case that many were detained without trial and totured. To give you some names. Simon Talibo Sanneh, Kutobo Sanyang, Alieu Sallah, MAss Corr. Even Siriff Dibba (whom i dislike) was arrested at verious times without justification and totured. On press freedom, remember Sanna Sabally. Arrested and totured and charged with fictious charges and his news paper was closed. By the time he was acquitted, he was broke ass because he dared to criticize ministers in the government. Jawara also brought us this God awful military that has become for all intents and purposes a canser in our society. What do we need a military for? Who will we be defending against? Our only neighbor is senegal and no matter how big our military becomes, if they were not compelled by international laws, they could take over Gambia in a matter of days. Geographically, the country is simply indefensable against senegal. We have over three hundred miles of boarder with senegal on both sides. On corruption, Jawara started this insedious culture of corruption that has gripped gambia. We all know of the corruption of Saikou Sabally, OJ, JAwara himself (the abacha oil deals), Jawaras inlaw momodou musa njie ( it was farely well nkown that he never paid goods at the ports) I know because my brother was a customs officer). We also know that Jawara built few schools, no university no tv station, a midocer radio station, poor roads, one functional hospital to speak of. We all know also that JAwara spent millions of our money in that nonsense senegambia confideration and hirered nigerian troops for his protection and almost gave up our soverignty to senegal. We are also aware of jawaras travels. He was one of nonly a few leaders who could be away from his country for more than a month. We know that that was the case before july 22.
The only possitive i could tell about jawara was perhaps he was more educated and knew the inner workings of government better. The other thing i could say is that perhaps he did not leave us with a huge national debt compared to Jammeh. He also did not come out and verbally insult gambians and heep them with treats, nor did he insult our intellegance by lying to us about oil and other things. Jammeh for instance has told so many lies to Gambians that he definately qualifies as a pathological lier. I also never questioned Jawaras sanity. I know he was a devious crook for sure but i never thought he was criminally insane. I am convinced that is the case with Jammeh. Jammeh has Hitlars pathology. Someone who lies effortlessly someone whoes brutaility has no bounds and someone who is obsessed with self agrandizement. (His excellency colonel Dr Alhagi Yahya AJJ Jammeh. Phd, GCORG, GMRG,High Prist of the Cult of Kanili) . He seem to be either ignorant of or oblivious to the fact that people who have honorary degrees never adress themselves with dr. No does he know that giving awards of Grand commander of the order of the republic to his mother does not count since that is meaningless once he is overthrown or killed.
So to answer your question, The two leaders are just different in the degree of their sanity. Jawara was criminal and saine but jammeh is plain nuts. All of you know someone who was just like that IDI Amin. Sure jammeh has not gotten to the point of eating human flesh yet. But who knows? It might just be his next development project |
