You know recently an American friend of mine asked me why the president of the Gambia has such a long name: His Excellency, Rt. Colonel, Chairman, Sheikh, Professor, Alhagie, Dr. yahya Alphonse, Jemus, Junkung Jammeh.
I was embarassed because I did not know the answer but I tried to answer this way:

1. His Excellency-because he is excellent and does not make mistakes. Everything he does is in the best interest of the Gambian people.
2. Rt. Colonel- because he led a military coup and before he retired from the army to become a civilian president he promoted himself from lieutenant to colonel.
3. Chairman- because he was the chair of the military council that took over the country in a coup.
4. Sheikh- because he was appointed an Islamic leader by the Gambia's Supreme Islamic Council (SIC).
5. Professor- because he was confered a professorship by a little-known university somewhere in the world. Gambians still do not know for sure which university is this. They do not also know the how and why of this.
6. Alhagie- because the president has visited Mecca (Saudi Arabia) many times.
7. Doctor-because he built the University of the Gambia with his own hand and so he was appointed the Chief Witch doctor in the university's department of medicine.
8. Yahya- that is his real, authentic name. That one all Gambians know for sure.
The next three are the most problematic ones. They are the three devils, Alphonse, Jemus and Junkung.
9. Alphonse-this is the oldest 99 year-old devil. He rules from Mondays to Wednesdays. He is the one who hires and give out government contracts. He is very much loved by the Lebanese, Nigerians and the Taiwanese ...
10. Jemus- this is the youthful 21 year-old devil. He rules only on Thursdays. He fires all those hired by the older devil Alphonse bwteeen Mondays and Wednesdays. This is the one that shuns Gambian men and appeals to Gambian women. He organizes all the set-setals and the land grabbing. He likes fanfare too, the birthday parties, beauty pageants, and welcomes Vivianne and Sizzla to the State House...
11. Junkung- this one is the baby, one year-old devil. He cries a lot and throw temper tantrums. He rules Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays .He would strike his opponents with his fist or throw them biscuits so they get run over by his speeding convoy.
12. Jammeh- this one is also authentic. It is his true name. All Gambians agree on that one too.
