quote: In an editorial entitled "Obama's Great Mistake," the center-left daily Süddeutsche Zeitung writes:
"Obama's people certainly imagined things differently. But reality has caught up with them. What should they do with people who … are in fact horrifying criminals but whose confessions came as a result of brutal interrogations? No regular court would accept the testimony. Should suspected masterminds of the 9/11 attacks and other terrible attacks be set free? That can't be the solution either. Obama is thus considering holding on to the military commissions with a couple of extra rights for the suspects. Bush light, so to speak."
"Obama is thus discrediting both himself and the US. It would be better were he to gather the necessary political courage to initiate criminal proceedings before regular courts. Legally, it will be incredibly complicated and possibly untenable in some cases. But the country cannot get around the purification process. Otherwise, the poison from the Bush era could continue to infect America's image for years to come."
Leadership is truly full of challenging troubles. On a comparison, I greatly share the frustration expressed in this write-up. If Obama is wise enough, he will not follow any of the footsteps of his predecessor. Bush (the clown and war monger) brought a lot of unstability to this world. I hope President Obama's advisors, unless not true to reality, will get some sanity into his head.Another Bush now, means more sufferation for people everwhere. That indeed will be far from the expectations of many including myself who thought Obama will truly be that man -to deliver us to the promised land (Dr. King's vision). Bush' departure was a sense of ease to humanity all over, because the United States (The World's superpower) is supposed to play a very important role -diplomacy and table-talk instead of unjustified wars and all sorts of nonsenses. I think that the wounds and scars that Bush left on humanity is not going to heal anytime soon, notably Iraq is still in ruins. At the end of his presidency, a shoe thrown at him in Bagdad during a press conference was a sticker -something that will forever remind him of his part -taking the world from civilization to unstability. Even where as I disagreed and totally condemned terror groups like Al-Qaida and the Criminal Bin Laden, the truth remains diplomacy would have been the best route for America, rather than taking the world to war. The war is still on, and we cannot crown victory to any of the terror groups (whether terror administrations that call themselves governments, or terror groups that call themselves jihadists.) To me, one equals the other. They are all wrong.
I now realized the problem with leadership; people come in with good intentions and ambitions of liberating people and nations. As they sit on the high chair, they get intoxicated with power to the brims of their neck bottles, and start acting like bullies and brutes on people. For example, Mugabe (Zimbabwe) during his ascend to power was seen as a visionary leader. Slowly, slowly, he turned into a monster. Yaya Jammeh (Gambia, The) came with all slogans: Accountability; transparency; probity; 30 years of corruption; 30 years of political difference; etc...and now he is the worst human rights violator in the globe -one that is very intoxicated with power and greed. Saihou Touray (Guinea Conakry), Nino Veira (Guinea Bissau) and Papa Eyadema (Togo) all went through similar political toad metamorphosis. No wonder Mandella (Father of African Nations) didn't stay longer. There is probably this good reason why he didn't stay long enough. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a fine head of state who ruled with humbleness and consideration to the Muslim umma (nation) and even to those that didn't follow religion Islam. Whatever is with power that makes people change from good to worst is something that I seek refuge in. Will it ever be possible to have a world where people (moreso the ordinary) will just wake up each day to live in peace without fear of being victimized by some political monsters? You keep wondering non-stop...and me too!
Thanks Momodou, and it is truly a balancing piece on the scale to the forwarded link from the Point Newspaper.
