Gambia River and Gambia itself looks like a knife in Senegal’s stomach. That is causing lots of problems between two countries.
It looks Gambia is an obstacle for Senegal to access to its southern territory, Casamance, but actually Senegal is also obstacle for Gambia as Gambia being enclave within Senegal. These two realities are creating issues by negative approaches from both countries towards each other. Both countries are using their power over each other negatively. So what is the solution? One options would be 1. Gambia to built a bridge on the river 2. Senegal to have permission to operate its own access crossing Gambia river 3. Tunnel under Gambia 4. Tunnel under Gambia River I think both countries needs to stop fighting and work co-operatively. Ideal solution should benefit both countries. And that is option 1 and 4.
Option 1-4 : Gambia alone may not be able to afford this. It may be too costly considering the distance between north/south in west more than 5 KM. It may be better alternative to build the bridge in the middle instead of Banjul – Barra. This way the bridge would bring economic activity to the middle so the crowded population would move to centre and Gambian Government may plan the new cities in the middle with better planning.
The project cost should be shared by both Senegal and Gambian Governments. So what is in it for me? Well, Senegal will have non-stop transportation link which would be free to Casamance. Gambia may lose fees for the ferry but it gets a bridge/tunnel that helps its economy too. Just like Senegal, Gambia has the same problem connection north/south too. Everyone is winner.
Option 2-4 are not good ones as the issues between two countries would continue. I am not sure what is preventing these countries solving this problem? Money? Political will? Stubbornness? Any Idea?

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

My idea is that this goes much further than just the hardware of a bridge, its a matter of independence for the Gambia itself, why? very simple Senegal is a very big country,Gambia is a very small country, the fear of Gambians is that Gambia will no longer be a country on its own it will essentially become part of Senegal and everything in Gambia would be controlled by Senegal, which still has a french way of thinking, just look at the EU for instance a joining of 27 countries that have been quietly being taken over by france and germany as the countries who want to have predominant power, all the other countries just talk and do nothing but talk, whilst france and germany work quietly in the background reinforcing their powerbase within the EU. (I hate politics ) |

Gambia's economic development means more political independence. |

Won't argue with that at all but in this case your signature to posts says it all |
