When I look at the map, I see mostly Mexico and western countries have cases for outbreak. Not much in Middleeast/South Asia/Africa. I hope it is not the case for Africa as health infrastructure is worse in the world. One comment was that the map showing swine outbreak in only western countries, because they have the technology and health infrastructure to identify that is happening. Africa still could not identify but it may be actually happening. That is very dangerous.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

I agree Turk. It looks like it is spreading quite quickly. I doubt that Gambia has stock piles of the necessary drugs. If you are a healthy person with a good immune system and you live in a place where there is good access to health care then there is little to fear.
But if you live somewhere with poor hygiene and have poor general health through poor nutrition the flu virus will take hold more quickly and pass through the community. Then add to that the lack of access to appropriate drugs and you can see where the danger of deaths arises.
The people being diagnoses in Europe so far all have links to Mexico, having recently returned from trips there.
Perhaps Africa should ban travelling to USA and Mexico to attempt to stop it entering the continent. But you are right Turk, it could already be there. |

Really, it is strange and a little bit spooky. Only two days before the first news of the outbreak of this swine influenza reached us, I thought that it was 'high time' for another new 'pandemia' - like SARS, bird flu, Ebola etc: It seems as if those epidemics are following certain schedules, and there was a longer break after the last one, i think it was bird flu. Voilą: Two days later we had 'swine influenza'.
Now we see the old pattern again: The media create a world wide hysteria, and in the end the pharmaceutical industry makes a lot of money with the production of new vaccines and medicaments. Who tells us that all these 'epidemics' aren't man-made? Why do they always start in poorer countries?
Sorry, but concerning the pharma industry I am very cynical. I think these people are unethical beyond comparison (okay, except for the arms industry, the energy companies, the intelligence services...etc. ). |

If what I heard on the news is correct they tend to start in poor countries because the people tend to have more day to day close contact with the animals and somehow it jumps from the animals to humans.
Also the people have poorer general health and less access to medication. |

This is true, but it does not answer the question why there are always certain intervals between these epidemics, and why all these 'new' diseases are said to have the potential of becoming pandemics, with fantazillons of victims, etc. etc.
We should take care, but we should also take care not to get hysterical, this is what I think.
But maybe it is like the story of the boy who used to cry 'Wolf, wolf!'... |
