Two Independent Staffers Released, One Reporter Still Held

The Independent (Banjul)
PRESS RELEASE
April 20, 2006

By Baba G. Jallow

The Independent newspaper's general manager Madi Ceesay and Editor-in-chief Musa Saiodykhan were this afternoon released from NIA custody. Messrs Ceesay and Saidykhan were arrested on March 27 and had since been alternately held at the Police Serious Crimes Unit and National Intelligence Agency headquarters in Banjul. The two have not been charged with any crime.

Meanwhile, as of today, the paper's offices remain closed and under police guard. Also, reporter Lamin Fatty, who was arrested last week remains held by the NIA.

On behalf of The Independent's management and staff, we wish to thank everyone who has been helping resolve this issue. We also urge you all to continue applying pressure on the Gambian authortities for the release of Mr. Fatty and the reopening of the newspaper's offices.

One to go. Lets all keep the pressure on Junkung. I tell you Junkung is like any one of us. The powers he is claiming are non existent. I have just seen a posting that he is seeking help from Turkey. I thought he said that he is not afraid of any nation. Why seek help then. It is all propaganda.

When cornered the guy will run. Dictators are the biggest cowards and survive by instilling fear in the people. Thats their secret.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

Kondorong, u're absolutely right. Instilling fear dramatizes insecurity, and insecurity breeds insecurity. Secured leaders resort on thier secured performances to secure them.
