JAMMEH'S QUALIFIED SUPPORT FOR COUPS
By Fabakary B Ceesay

The President of the Gambia indicated that he is in support of a coup d'etat that would save a country from catastrophe. He gave this indication while delivering a speech at July 22 square where the "Ten Thousand Man (Woman) March" terminated on Saturday, 15th April 2006. He defended the coup that he launched on July 22 1994, noting that had that not been the case Gambia would have slided into chaos and confusion.
He went on further to say that he can be over thrown by force of arms where he betrays the interest of the nation. But he was quick to add that he would never betray the interest of the nation.
In his speech, the President outlined two other types of coup apart from the one he supports. The two other types of coups which he opposes are
(a)One based on tribal lines
(b)One based on greed and personnel interest.
The third one which the President support is one geared to saving the country from catastrophe.
The statement of the President contradicts the slogan on the T-shirts and the spirit of the march, i.e., "No coup, yes to democracy." Even, Honourable Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay who spoke before him was unequivocal. She opposed coups d'etat and supported Democracy, full stop. She did not give any conditional support to coups.
President Jammeh did say he was going to shock his audience by his answer to the question whether or not he supports a coup. Indeed from my observation, when he gave a condition support for coups d'etat the audience was shocked. At least there was no applause at this stage.
Thousands were in attendance, including APRC supporters, employees from various government departments, parastatals, private companies, NGOs, youth organisations and women organisations. Their slogans opposed coups and supported democracy.
A Liberian representative gave a moving speech in which be narrated their experience and emphatically warned Gambians not to encourage coups.
The occasion was evidently an APRC affair as exemplified by the statements of Hon. Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay, SOS Yankuba Touray and President Jammeh. All of them made derogatory remarks against the opposition and called for support for President Jammeh.
The President said the opposition are not good citizens of the country because they never praise even the good things he does. "We have no opposition in the Gambia, what we have are dishonest politicians, tribalists, parasites and so-called intellectuals who are not intelligent." He added that the opposition will forever live in a dilemma because they can never be Alkalos not to talk of being President.
The procession itself started at Bund Road and ended at July 22 Square. It was led by the APRC national mobilizer, SOS Touray, SOS Singhateh, SOS Bala Jahumpa, majority leader Baldeh and many NAMs

I can only comment that some coups existed because of the spirit of patriotism to save a nation from catastrophic destruction as in the words of Jammeh's surprised comments as reported. It could be a worst case scenario where the political climate is highly volatile leading to chaos. However is Jammeh the only brave soldier or son capable of executing a successful coup or knew when a coup is justifiable or not justifiable; and advising his compatriots that everybody can follow suit. What a brave man and a big challenge to all of us? No more hypocritical defence for him as these are critical moments of truth.

Was Ndure Cham pursuing a coup based on tribe or greed. He should bring them before the courts so that we can better judge not him. Is the country heading towards a catastrophe, is any one's guess. It depends on which side your bread is buttered.

Kondorong are you using Jammeh's rationale from his statement to question Ndure Cham's led foiled coup from us or trying to imply from us that we have reasons to justify his failed attempt? Am sorry to say that I don't have any answers justifying or defending Ndure Cham's recent actions. However Jammeh in his own words supports coups and challenge us to take the risks where necessary or feasible.

Yes Kobo. I am using yaya's statements to question Cham's led "coup" from the bantaba.

I am actually using yaya's statements against what Ndure Cham has been alledged to have done. My questionn is, are there evideneces based on yaya's reasons for a coup to kake place. He should let us judge that and bring the coupist to court.

Does yaya heve evidence of a coup based on tribe or greed. If so let him bring it to light. Otherwise, we might assume that the alledged coup was based on saving the country. I am sure there are people who believe in this and as such, going by his criteria, it was justified for Ndure to act.

Others will argue that we are not heading that way. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The court however should be an idependent judge and is the best place to put his criteria to test and not organise an APRC rally of die hards who cannnot see beyond Yaya.

I bet APRC will die with yaya out of office just like NCP will after Sheriff.

Is Jammeh trying to say that his coup was indifferent with others or implying that "he who rule by the barrel of the gun must be deposed by the barrel of the gun?" These stupid remarks may have serious implications against him and discrediting himself in the eyes of the international community. Even his supporters and the APRC would question why he made such contradictory remarks?

When will this president of ours grow up.I mean didnt state house with all its flambouncy polish this kanilai lad up.Whenever he open his mouth nothing comes out than filth and garbarge. The processsion should not be dissapointed this man despite being president for 12 years still cannot distinguish speaking as a leader to the nation from speaking to mates probably in a attaya vous.Somestimes you feel embraced to be holding a Gambian passport with this ***** in office.

The arena is open for a good contest to the champion. In vernacular " MBOR MI CHI GAY WI". However I would conclude that Jammeh condones coups to be hatched and invite all threats to target him and eliminate him as he did not think about the consequences of his remarks.

To me, "JAMMEH'S QUALIFIED SUPPORT FOR COUPS" means if he loses, then he is the only one who can justify a coup in the future. Just reading between the lines! yeh,rah
