Nothing is more disappointing than trying to use Halifa's speech to justify jammeh's deadly actions.
If anybody wantsto condemn the falsely alllegede coup then the same person should equally unequivocally condemn the allege summary executions of decent Gambians in a stronger terms. Simple and pure.
We are thinking and sympathising with the relatives of the alleged executed.

Taalibeh that's not the case with Halifa's statement. Halifa did openly discredited the Jammeh's government as illegitimate, which is a criminal government as coups whether successful or not are trial treason in the constitution. |

That is my point Kobo. What I am trying to refute is the usage by some people of Halifa's speech to emphasise his mere condemnation of the alleged coup and condoning the jammeh government.
My point is intended to those calling for the condemnation of the alleged coup and ignoring the fact that alleged coupist are being maimed and executed without calling for the same to be condemned.
I am not arguing anything against Halifa. |

Kobo:
Thanks for the Easter present. My position is clear , but you still don't seem to get it. Jammeh is a tyrant , that is why we are all trying to remove him.But as decent people who uphold democratic principles , we are committed to removing him in an appropriate way. That is, we want to use a democratic process to remove him from power.I am a very optimistic person and I believe this is possible if we increase our efforts. All the structures are there for this to become a reality. I cannot support Jammeh or any other tyrant; but I cannot support any coupists as a matter of principle , just like Halifa Sallah said. You can refer to all my writings on this forum and it will be clear to you that I am not a supporter of Jammeh and I do not condone his atrocities against Gambian people. If you check my attack on Kondorong's fictional Sankofa (on April fools day)you will probably see my point. If I condone Jammeh's brutality , do you think I would have defended Dibba against Jammeh's arbitrary arrest when you and others were saying that he deserved it simply because of bad political choices he may have made in the past? You see there is a saying that "if you break your pod with rage you may have to eat it with dirt".Democracy is about patience and strategy , not emotions. I did not try to discredit you , but you have dicredited yourself and this was further confirmed by Halifa's speech. The main idea in Halifa's speech is clearly captured by Kondorong as he tried to explain but you didn't seem to get that either. What Halifa said is that despite his opposition and disapproval of the APRC government he (and NADD) cannot support a coup because it is a source of power that is not derived from the people.Again this position according to Halifa is a matter of principle. Halifa's speech is a great speech and it is the truth . Maybe that is why after that speech you quickly wanted us to end the discussion even though all your previous writings were contrary to the noble position highlighted in that speech. You seem to be an advocate of violence, Kobo. I have said earlier that violence do not work ; politics works.Condoleeza Rice (U.S. Sec. of State) has said about Hamas that "you cannot have one foot in terror and another foot in politics".We need to make our positions clear rather send mixed messages . A military coup or an armed struggle is not a solution to our problem right now. It will only further plunge us into chaos and tyranny. The Gambia ilitary needs to learn from their counterparts in Senegal perhaps, and stay out of politics . They cannot save us . They will bring another dictatorship .The Gambia is too small for an armed conflict. What Jammeh and other dictators fear is democratic process; what they like and thrive on is conflict. That is why conflict is not in our interest. That is why we need to push on with this democratic process. Your opinions are yours and you are entitled to them, but I cannot share them with you on this one. I thank you for your time and contributions , and for the Easter greetings.

Am not advocating for violence nor promoting it. There are lots of options available with positives and negatives my brother. I wish to reiterate again that coups existed as an open option and can be operative in certain situations. If the politics of advocacy of democracy is not working and there is a dictator and his agents terrorising and increasing conflicts and crises. That tantamounts to promoting it. However this topic is not about justification or promotion of a coup but rather exposing facts through a confession made and giving us food of thought. Thanks for your opinions and would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you if we are at cross-purpose on this topic. |

It would be interesting to advise you Kayaita to read a new topic "Jammeh's qualified support for a coup" and follow comments as there will be diverse opinions on this topic. |

You do not have to apologize for your opinions , because i am not offended by them. Rather I think you are a courageous fellow by eloquently arguing your position.I just happened to have a different view point; and the more we interact our different views the more likely that we will come up with a workable solution to Gambia's problems. This is not about you or me , it is about the Gambia. This has been an interesting topic for discussion, and i hope the original author of the piece will continue to tell us what he knows about the coup of July 1994.Even though some of us are skeptical about the accuracy and purpose of the account, it is nevertheless an important food for thought at this crucial time in the Gambia's political development. One Gambia , one people! Thanks. |

Kayjatta, if Kobo is tired and mesmerzed by this horrendous reality of Gambia today, let him(Kobo) appeal to Momodou. I didnt author the piece, i just forwarded it. If he (Kobo) cant see that then he needs specs to read with.
Bamba and all, the original narration of this horror was sent to the Gambia-l back in May 2001. I remember reading it there and I have now made a search and found it. It had been written by someone with a pseudonym "Ebou Colly" and was one of the series of articles called "Coup in Gambia". This particular one was called "COUP IN GAMBIA THREE". There are narrations about the 1994 coup from part one to part eleven. The one who wrote had been an ex-military officer who never disclosed his identity although there had been rumors that he was a former GNA Commander.
You can do some search at the Gambia-L archives at http://listserv.icors.org/archives/gambia-l.html and am sure you will find many articles by this person "Ebou Colly".

Thanks Momodou, when wisdom flies in thru the window the tumultuous bickering within the room ebbs. U surely know how to take care of your listmembers. Administering with proficiency is a comodity bereft in the day to day running of African affairs. I'll recommed to Halifa where to look for helping hands, in the event he captains the salvation ship of our country.
Having said that, I think the whole story is too apt to be concocted. It has to be some firsthand information. I tend to believe it, though u dont imply anything on the contrary. |

Guys have just gone over your wonderful comments and missed lively contributions for couple of hours. Bamba for your attention I mean "The topic" as I picked your name in one of the pages or page 1. Hope its clear. Kayaita compliments to you. However am critically minded or very controversial as I tend to explore both theories reflecting negatives and the positives. Hope you will appreciate there are diverse opinions. As this forum is seeking useful information we need to process raw materials. |
