Point Director
Pap Saine Disappoints His Journalists
By Solo, Banjul correspondent...........June18th, 2008

A young sports reporter at the Point Newspaper by the name of Mr. Ebou Manneh has received the shock of his life recently when he wrote a story indicating that the new coach for the Scorpions Paul Put was not happy with the ministry’s plans to hire a Gele-Gele to transport the Scorpions to Dakar ahead of their match with Algeria.

Uncle Pap Saine: Is he going to get free with this one??

The debate is so moving. I am glad that Gainako’s story has attracted this much attention, including the many calls from the Gambia. If for any sincerity and honesty, I again tip-off my hat for Solo for his extensive coverage on Gambian affairs and always with original reportage.

Gainako through its extension of hand, long since contacted Uncle Pap Saine for his side of the story. We look forward to hearing from him as time permits him.

Having said that, let us exercise some true and unbiased criteria for analysis leading to the story seemingly getting the wide media scope it deserved, but first I like to thank any one participating in establishing the truth, here or there –nothing but that whole mighty truth, especially Coach who through his clarity told his experience as it happened in the past. The good thing about Gainako, we can debate our forwards here, which show clear conscience. Those supporters to individuals also have a right to fight hard. That is ok. It is dissenting views at work. The similitude of this one was Waa Juwara’s story by the Freedom Newspaper which was similarly rebutted. Mighty Juwara was interviewed and he said “la la la!” In less than a month after that, the truth gushed forth and poor Nderry was never thanked for getting that story right. To me honest, this poor Manneh has a right to tell the truth, as well to support his god-father in saving mighty Uncle Saine from any embarrassment. By so doing, he is certain to keep his job and loved one -Saine.

Some facts:

-That there is a problem between E. Manneh and Axi Gainako
-That some threats were made to E. Manneh of the Point
-That communication took place between the Point Editors, especially Uncle Pap and Axi Gai, Sports Minister.
-That the “Gele-gele” story was dropped.

NB: What I believe is that if people can lie at the small level, there is no other level to which they cannot go to support a big lie. So and so, let Axi Gai tell the truth. That is the level of intellectual dishonesty and prostitution.

So and so, I will be happy that through Gainako’s reportage, this young sports reporter’s life and job be saved.

It is also up to the genuine readership at large, not just some disgruntled or concerned individuals to judge. Now let us hear more from others as well. Let us make it a healthy debate since we are all after the whole truth.

I thank you!

Yours at the Forums,
Yero.

For the note, Gainako stand by its reported story, in fact the branching media coverage from ours collaborated ours in report.

News Flash:
D-day for Ms Fatou Jaw Manneh!

Bro Karamba et all,

The debate is open here as well....

Brother Dalton

Thank you for this highly charged update about a case the whole world is watching. This case is clear about what some observers believe about Mr Jammeh's claim of being The Gambia. Given the gateway, we may end up seeing change of name from Gambia to Jammeh. He is capable of doing that so that even after he dies, the name of Gambia remains Jammeh. Sound incredible but that is where we stand as a nation.

My question to any judge would have been whether anyone disagrees with Fatou Jaw Manneh that Jammeh is in reality a BUNCH OF TERROR and a FROSTY IMAM. Don't you think that is true about Jammeh at all? The law being what it is, and due to powers of interpretation facts may not matter.

Fatou Jaw Manneh deserves to be released UNCONDITIONALLY and be COMPENSATED for every loss of time and other valuables.

Thanks Indeed bro karamba!

Good luck to her!

D-Day!!

..................APRC VS. Journalist Fatou Jaw Manneh
For over a year now, Journalist Ms. Fatou Jaw Manneh has been tried
by the APRC administration for comments she made about a democratic
process online.

Sources close to Ms. Manneh's court file in Banjul informed this reporter
of the current situation about her case. According to this impeccable
source, Ms. Manneh's defense Lawyer, Lamin Jobarteh will complete a
final submission to the Magistrate Buba Jawo of the Kanifing Court on
Monday, June 23rd 2008.

Our home-based analyst noted that once that happens, the magistrate can
make a final ruling or adjourn it to another day, but all are certain that the
adjournment in this snail-dragging case left many questioning the interest
that the APRC has in Ms. Manneh's case. While many said it is scare-crow
tactics, others said Ms. Manneh's Activism is very spicy.

Family sources who spoke with this reporter hinted that Ms. Manneh is in high spirit, notably was seen
drinking green tea locally 'attaya' earlier on the day before her court's D-day .

At the time of filing this story, we called some of Ms. Manneh's friends in the US who wish her well in
this trying moment. In the past, Gainako editors has cautioned Magistrates handling this case the need
for 'due diligence' and making sure justice is truly rendered. In side line, Ndey Jobarteh and Jabou Joh
spear-headed a petition known to be the call to the international community where in collected
signatures supporting the petition were sent to different organizations with the hope of seeing an end to
this case.

Meanwhile Gainako's magnificent reminder to the APRC and the presiding magistrate is that the
international community's eye is on them; and that 'justice delayed is justice denied.'

Dalton, if i had to look at this scenario in the context of Gambian culture(which I will do) i certainly see no threat to kill here. All indications are that when the Secretary of State for sports said "if anybody is trying to kill me, i will kill you" he either was speaking in his native wollof tongue(ku ma buga rei ma rei la) and this was translated directly into directly into English or the Secretary of State was unconciously translating a Wollof phrase(as most people who learned English as a second language tend to do) into English when he made the allege threat. "Ku ma buga rei, ma rei la" is never a direct or indirect threat to kill but a figure of speech. That is to say the sports Secretary of State was figuratively speaking. In a nutshell "if anybody is tryng to get me axed, i will get to you first". What is clear here is a paranoid Secretary of State who is more worried about his job security than roaming the streets of Serekunda with a machete, looking for journalist Manneh. I am not attempting to justify the Secretary of State's hysterical reaction to this issue, he could have handled it in a more profesional manner, but there was no point to attempt to sensationalise such a petty issue on the part of Journalist Manneh.

By the way a Gelegele does not not necessarily mean a battered, off-the-road van with a "tail" hanging from its rear as the Gambia Echo would want us to believe. It simply means a minibus, new or old. The sports Ministry reserves the right to decide what mode of transport best qualify the journey to Dakar in any given circumstance. To adduce that the sport Ministry was going to hire a battered Gelegele for the Scorpions, some of whose monthly or twice montly wages could charter a commercial airline to Dakar is outrageously stupid and that is being kind. AS IF GAMBIA HAS NOT GOT MORE PRESSING ISSUE OF SIGNIFICANCE OR IMPORTANCE!!!!

Bro Shaka,

I like your analysis, though, you and I threaded on the 'threats of Algerians to Gambians- bombing the hotel' just last week.We came to the conclusion that a threat is a threat. Under Gambia's current situation especially, I won't take any ones comments lightly, especially regarding death threats.

That said, how funny:

You call poor minister Gai, asking him as to whether, he did threaten a journalist. What do you expect from him? I love to hear from others.

Have a good one!

Come on Dalton you can do better than that!! There can only be a threat on jounalist Manneh's life if Manneh was infact conspiring to kill the Secretary of State. Was he? You know that logic is not rational.

Me too, I wish sis. fatou well. I thought you also like the above links.

Don't say 'I will kill you' in my presense because I am too sensitive to it. Probably, just another scare-crow tactic, or just another bluff fuuuuuuuuuuf from a poor minister. Neysaan! But that won't safe his job though. I am sure you know Mburrif Duff's electric broom is blind at times.

Shaka, the threat on the youngman's life is not necessarily going to come from the Minister. The threat on his life is a concern because of the regimes record on arresting citizens on pretense. The minister has given the NIA the perfect issue to arrest this youngman and burry him six feet deep.

This is where the concern is. If he manneh were to be arrested and detained indefinitely, neither Pap Saine no the Gambiaecho could do anything about it. The fact that these people are willing to threaten a reporter's life for simply publishing a story is just beyond believe.

Truth be told I want to believe that the tone of voice used in communicating to the said journalist who is a Gambian and I believe too that he does know the difference between a mere statement and a threat in words spoken in wollof, his own language, was in no doubt that he was being threatened with death. In the current Gambian context such threats cannot be taken lightly bearing in mind the late Deyda Hydara's case. I cannot accept a trivialization of this as a semantic use of words , it was a threat if the words were actually used, and the only acceptable way out is a retraction by the Honorable ;if he is honorable, Minister. An old Gambian saying goes that if your grand father was mauled to death by a red bull if you sight a red ant hill you will run like hell to escape from it.I knew Axi Gai as a gentleman in those days but who knows what changes can take hold of individuals under such conditions as exist in The Gambia, turning them into all kinds of creatures. Strange things do happen my dear friends ! ''Thinks about this'' ;as a comedian on Desmond's always says.

Threat is a threat as i said before. Mass Axi, affectionately called Axi is a perfect gentleman. I have known him for long before travelling over here. He is also generous with the little he had even during his days at GPA. However, i am disappinted with him for issuing such threats. As Shaka said, threat from him could have emanated from the fact that there are people out there in Banjul, whose sole buisness is bringing people down. So Axi being a shrewd guy knows that the young Manneh is being manipulated. I have been in football for sometime. i know for certain, that GFA no-matter how cash trapped they are would NEVER EVER, transport Squad players to Dakar by Gele-Gele. This is becos even first division clubs like GPA who until recent times make exchange visits with their Senegalese counterparts use a cosy coaster. The same is true of Gamtel FC. So how on earth given the level of advancement Gambian Football has reached lately, could the boys be transported by Gele-Gele to Dakar?

My conclusion is (you dnt have to like it) the youngman is being used to mudsling the Minister. Despite that, Axi should have known better not to use such a strong language even whereby provoked.

Come brethren, there is no threat to kill here. A threat it was and an open one for that matter, not necessarily directed at the journalist. It is a classic case of "who the cap fits" and journalist Manneh would have been mad to wear that cap to court. Wearing the cap is twinned with self confession of conspiring "to kill" the Secretary of State. Was Manneh conspiring "to kill" the Secretary of State? Figuratively, there is every indication he did. Literally, no!! Don't get me wrong here, i am not defending the Secretary of State's action, he reacted equally foolishly and could have acted more professionally and that is where the buck ends in terms of his crime.

Baldeh, if that story was published, the NIA might have visit Manneh and rightly so, for he was a foolish young man and Pape Saine would have been insane to allow the story be published. He would have had one heck of a lawsuit on his table and deservedly so. In the end an experienced sage head prevailed over a foolish young man and that credit goes to Pape Saine. Madiba you clearly understand the conspiracy that was unfolding. What the heck is this little country turning into. Talk about dog eat dog!!!

I still maintain that he who feels it knows it. The journalist should know if he was threatened. I accept Pap Saine's prudent approach but having said that; what stops the minister from just being cool instead of prancing and issuing threats as he allegedly did, after being spoken to by Pap Saine.Conspiracy theorem abound in our society ,yes indeed! it does but what about the hounding of our honorable journalists too, one of them surely died this way .This is the truth! Can this be ignored too? I hope not dear friend Shaka, it should be mentioned and condemned roundly and squarely as it has been , or questioned to verify the veracity in the least.

Kaaniba we all denounce hounding of journalists for whatever reason, however when a journalist goes around writing fictitious stories of no significance to a society's development, with the sole aim of distabilising a certain leadership structure, then am afraid you are looking for trouble. Different people might react to this in different ways. The sports Minister reacted like a hysterical chicken and i don't condone his action. However with that said another nutcase could have reacted in a more extreme measure and most of the blame would lie squarely on Mr Manneh's shoulders. When you area journalist in Jammeh's Gambia, unless you are committing suicide, you can only write "the truth" you can defend in a court of law.

With all this said there is certainly a conflict brewing between the Sports Ministry and the GFA. This is mostly to do with the presence of a commanding and intimidating personality in the head of the Armed Forces of the Gambia, CDS Lang Tombong Tamba as Vice President of the GFA. Noble and good his intentions for Gambia soccer might be but the GFA is an independent body and the presence of such an ifluential government figure will not harness fair and balance collective decision making. Both the GFA and Sports Ministry operate on a peanut budgets and imprudent decision making will have bad consequences for Gambian soccer and sports in general especially with FIFA exercising zero tolerance on government interferance in national football matters. Brigadier General Tamba's role should be limited to a honorary member of the GFA. Just my opinion.
