Sister you say the majority of families do have other occupations other than tourism. People may be busy around the compound, but the MAJORITY do not have any paid work. Business men in Gambia may indeed make money, but what percentage are business men (or women! ).
I think there is a big difference between a couple of weeks holiday in a country and perhaps choosing to make a country a second home. If you are considering the later then the laws and customs should make a BIG impact on the decision. I couldn't settle in Gambia as it is now. Too much going on that I disagree with. i would probably end up in prison. But likewise, though I have been on holiday to USA I couldnt live there. It is too inward looking, too consumerist and in some states it still has the death penalty, which I oppose. |

Sounded like politician. Of course, but the problem is the lawlessness being apply on tourists by the law enforces who are outlaw. :)

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

I totally agree with this article I myself being a long time tourist for 6 years now staying between 3 to 6 months in the high season and over the years have experienced the scams that start from the time you arrive at the airport to the time you leave. It appears any one in a government or an official position will try and scam money from you. They are worse than the bumsters who usually go away with a polite but firm No thank you, Not so with any official and over the years it’s getting worse.
Like many long stay tourists we don’t stay in hotels where the money goes out of the country back to the tour operators but stay in local establishments or compounds’ usually owned by Gambians so our money goes to the local economy.
I do not believe the official tourist figures that the number of tourists going to Gambia has increased. All the bars and restruants were noticeably quieter last year even the fruit sellers and bumsters were saying how quite it was.
I know many brits who lived there or were long stay tourists that have sold up and are now going else ware. I my self only went back last year for 2 weeks and went to Thailand for the winter immediately saving over £200 on the long term airfare and with the value of the Dalasi it was far cheaper. So taking all things into account do I go back I don’t know!!!
I guarantee if there is a noticeably drop in the tourists going to the Gambia It will all be blamed on the credit crunch and not the problems in Gambia.
As Nigeria has the reputation of being the most corrupt country in West Africa and the internet scam centre of the world They don’t care because they have the oil what has Gambia got a beach and birds. I do wish you well but as the reputation and corruption and all the problems in Gambia grows I don’t think the future looks rosy

snuggels you are right the officials atthe airport are still corrupt and righ in your face, what a welcome to GAMBIA for 1st time visiors. lurker, people sunbathed topless around the pool at Kombo beach, i was a bit surprised because did not think the hotel allowed it. the tourist figures have not increased, but the amount of building of tourist attractions/accommodation has. BY THE WAY WHAT PRATT BUILT A FUN FAIR near sneegambia, over priced and not supported by tourist, it is a place for rich gambia teenagers to go to. |
