Hmmm... this Miss Owusu lays it on thick... All these stories about alleged intrigues, stolen ideas, broken promises, etc. I think the whole thing is a canard.

If not: Are you sure something like Disneyland would attract more families and help the tourism industry? I am not sure, but maybe I am biased because I see Disneyland & Co. as a resource-consuming orgy of bad taste.

sere,

Once, I was at training session for IT stuff, anyway, there were japanase, european, american, canadians, chinese etc were asked to introduced themselves and dream places to go. Most people other than Americans reply the favorite places like Egypt, Amazon, Safari, Tahiti, Tac Mahal, Greek Islands, Maldivs all kind of superb historical and natural places. Those almost all american responded with Disneyland. That was sooo funny.

I do not think people will come to Gambia for disneyland. Most come to gambia to experience african culture, sex tourism and volunteering. It may be better to open a Stripz clubz and Red Light Zone. At least government can control sex tourism and get some tax dollars.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Haha, Turk - good idea! I am sure this is going to be a great place that will attract lots of tourists (of the wrong type, but hey, who cares as long as they spend money ). But can you keep the bumsters out?? I hope there will be many shops (souvenirs, but with fixed prices so no tiring negotiating and of course for the necessities like condoms, dirty magazines and tanning lotions to make wrinkled bodies look younger) and a casino, of course!

Toubab1020: that's just it with people: you think you know what they will do and then they don't! Sorry to disappoint you, just when you looked so nice with your tin hat on.
Madiba, i like your sense of humour but i have to disappoint you too: they already have these things all over the place in Turkey (why do you think so many people spend their holidays there?).
But no, there must never be something like WOWland in the Gambia! But then, Disneyland..???
Please NO! I am thinking of all the poor Gambians having to walk around in heavy Mickey and Goofy etc. suits in the heat. They'd have to make one hour-shifts, or people would collapse. Oh man, the ideas some people come up with...

madiba

Have you been to sulukule, karakoy, beyoglu?

Disneyland in Gambia is the cheeeesiest tourism idea ever. Come on, nations promote their uniqueness, authentic values. Instead of that money. Some national park to be open and bring animals like lions, buffalo and some other wild animals, and promote mini-safari or jungle river gambia with hipo, crokodile etc...

They are building Disney type tourist attractions all over the world Why because it increases tourism and creates work for the locals and brings the money in.
OK do both build a national park as well Think big. But leave things to the Gambian Govenment and it isnt going to happen. You need someone like Diseny with the money and muscle to make it happen.

There's already the beginnings - what's that p[lace that's opened up on the highway just before you get to Senegambia strip (coming from Kotu on the right hand side). It's a sort of a theme park and had people outside in Disney like costumes when I was last there.....

Personally I hate the idea - who want to be the same as everywhere else? Why does the Gambia want to attract any kind of tourist? Why not trying to go for more up market tourists? OK you get fewer people but they have more money....
Just a thought ......

p.s. I'm going in August - advice please on how to deal with the heat and the rain ....... (am I mad?!)

My advice, Lily: Enjoy it! The heat is not as bad as I thought, and the heavy, warm rain is delightful. I loved it! Ok, I am not the type of tourist who lies in the sun for hours, working hard on my personal skin cancer...
