As a follow up to some piece on the Bantaba, i have decided that we need to dissect the role of Sherrif Dibba in Gambian politics, from his days in the PPP, his decision to resign, his role in the mass sackings of chiefs, his days in NCP upto 1994, his role as Finanace minister and the its consequence on the Commercial and Development bank, his alliance with the Jammeh regime, his role as Speaker of the house and his eventual arrest.
We need to look at why he stayed longer in opposition more than any one of us could rememeber. What kept him going on and why was he always hopeful to defeat jawara. Your thoughts please.

As a human being you are bound to make mistakes.he is a decent man compare to the overall political make up of his generation.I think his strategy did not materialized. He does not like the president wholeheartedly, but he thinks the best way to undermind a despot is by internal penetration. You cant fight with a soldier.Just undermind him. That brought to his downfall. He can be successful if is a mature democracy but we are far from that stage yet.
I wish him all the best. |

interesting , it brings to mind two things. one,the general stereotype that we gambians have on each other is that we are not business minded.
two, if you look at the banking sector in the gambia it is the only country i know where all the banks are foreign owned (established with foreign capital)!
perhaps it was vision, as Finance Minister then, to create a Commercial & Development Bank (CDB)to help many farmers and gambians into private entreprise? of course CDB's impact can be debated but its meaning is even more true today when we need a real gambian bank in every sense of the word. |

I believe the CDB was a good initiative needed even to this day. Our Banking sector is mostly foreign owned. The CDB was hijacked by some corrupt few to the enrichment of personal gains. The bank has sadly collapsed and Jawara needs a lot of explaining to do.
My memory is fading but i would like to think that Ousainou Njie became the General Mamager after Sheriff left the PPP. If not what was sheriff's stand on this.
It is also said that sheriff's stand against the chiefs was what cost him his political falilure in making an in-road. Was there a good reason to depose the chiefs or was it because they did not support PPP. Sheriff was MC Cham incarnated in the PPP. At least i was told that he was famous for using power even when the law forbids it. A famous saying was " NSING SEMBO LA JEH". That is, i will put my authority to bear on the law to make it happen. I was not born in 1965, and oral history is very inconsistent. May be i was speaking to another PPP sankofa. " SO SO LA SO" is a game in which you hit a ball at any body no matter what and sometimes you cannot leave the game which was a signature song during his rallies. Did it mean that he was going to leave no stone unturned or was it his inability to see that not all in government were with Jawara.
Also there is another historical fact to suport this . The music of Lalo Kebba Drammeh in which he say " BANKU KANTALA NING MANSA TEH KILING TI' is indicative of in tolerance and patronage and leaves no rooom for other opinions. Infact this tune had been carefully edited and was always played before every rally he ever organised. he must have believd in it. May be this expalins why NCP will die when Sheriff ceases to exist. There is no credible person in the 30 plus years of the party to take over. he had been a loner all along but i think he had bit too much he could bite. May be he was over ambitious to develop and therefore made him an angry man for the slow pace of devlopment. He must be credited to have principles and the guts to resign- not only a rare quality of his time, but even to this day.

Sheriff Dabaa Dibba used the like of my Dad to contest under his failed party. This man is greedy. Sheriff lacks the personality of been a Gambian leader. I guess he forget about what Chief Jammeh of Illiasa told him. Thats he will always be smoking but wont light to be a fire. He is an opportunist who has betrayed many people. I remember when certain PPP and NCP supporters in my home village never speak to each other because of segregation he brought in. Image presidential candidate who has no agenda was quoting saying that Jassong people need to prosecute Jawara for the death of late Amang Kanyi, who was one time a minister of works and communication during which he Sheriff was under PPP. What a contradictionary statement he did. During the last presidential election Sheriff Dibba and his campaign team came to my village, it was just time for friday prayers. To our surprise all his delegation members joined the congregational prayers except him and Majanko Samusa. How would he infact secure their vote when he portray himself as a pagan. Societies like ours one has to show the citizens some kind of respect in order for them to join your boat. As Yankuba Touray's saying (NEE BULATA MALIBALI KULUNG LA EE KATA GEE JEELAY FENTENDA). This is what Sheriff see himself. No pity for him. |
