BANJUL, April 4 (Reuters) - Five Gambians accused of plotting a foiled coup last month in the tiny West African state escaped from custody on Tuesday when the vehicle taking them to a prison crashed into a ditch, police said.

The five men -- including four military officers -- were still at large and authorities appealed to the public for help in capturing them, a statement from the inspector general of police said.

President Yahya Jammeh's government released a further 13 suspects without charge on Tuesday. Officials said some 12 people were still in detention.

The suspected mastermind of the attempted coup on March 21, former Chief of Defence Staff Colonel Ndure Cham, has gone into hiding and authorities believe he may be in neighbouring Senegal.

Jammeh, a former wrestler, has ruled Gambia since seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1994 and is expected to seek a third term at elections due in October.

Anyone have any names of who has escaped or been released?

This is news to me. I hope we can trust this information. Are they really alive. I hope it is not another Foday Makalo mystery.

WE KNOW EVERY BODY KNOWS EVERYBODY IN THE GAMBIA SO HOW WOULN'T THEY BE RECOGNISED AS THEY WALK THE STREETS TO THEIR HIDDING PLACES?

INFACTh HOW CAN THEY ESCAPED WHEN THEY WERE HAND CUFFED AND SOME WHERE CHAINED AS CLAIMED BY THEIR FAMILIES AND THOSE WHO SAW THEM BEEN TAKEN?

I HAVE A VERY BIG FEAR NOW IF THIS STORY IS TRUE.GOD LET IT NOT BE TRUE FOR I BELIEF IF TRUE, THEN I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.

OH GOD WHERE DID YOU HEAR THIS FOR IT WAS NOT IN ANY NEWS PAPER?

I can never trust this statement to be true. This is absolutely fictitious. I bet you all can remember jammeh saying in his address to the nation that he will set an example on the alledged plotters. To me this is the example. Jammeh will always pre-empt his actions.

He is very good at being economical with the truth but very poor in the art of presenting it. The statement is incomplete and pathetic.

Imagine people regarded so dangerous like that being transported with such an inadequate security protection en rout to a place of detention, that all of them managed to escape after an accident. What a coincidence. Did all the escorts die and the coupist survived and then escaped? I wonder who advises this guy on this style of lying. I trust these people have a motive at the back minds of making jammeh look stupid in the eys of the public.

We saw this kind of behaviour during the November 11th alledged coup. This is not strange at all.

But personnally I do not believe that these people escaped. I pray that it is the truth and my doubts are proved wrong.

I dont even know what to make of this but it sounds ridiculous to me.I hope its just a ploy because if its not, what the hell is happening to security in the country. If they cant secure such "high level security details" how the hell are they suppose to secure the country for a more serious security risk.

Another news item on The Gambiajournal also has it that according to one NIA insider, the vehicle transporting the said escapees was ambushed by some armed men,the soldiers accompanying them contained and handcuffed on a vehicle, then the coup plot detainees taken away.I hope and pray that that version be the reality instead of what everybodys believes happened to them.

Come on. This is not Rambo style films and i think it is an insult to the intelligence of gambians. No guns fired and the whole escort tied to the vehicles. On which road. how come no one saw them. This is mickey mouse tale from Disney World.

5 COUP PLOTTERS ESCAPE
Written by Ousman Darboe
Wednesday, 05 April 2006
Five of the suspected March 21 coup plotters are now thought to be on the run after escaping from a vehicle that was carrying them to the Janjanbureh Prisons, Central River Division (CRD).
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Inspector-General of Police last night and signed by ASP A Bojang, Police Public Relations Officer, the escapees are Mr Daba Marena, Lt Ebou Lowe, 2nd Lt Alieu Ceesay, Warrant Officer Alpha Bah, and Staff Sergeant Manlafi Corr.
The statement explains that the five suspects fled when the vehicle slammed into a ditch and almost somersaulted. The police have therefore urged the general public to volunteer any information that will lead to the arrest of the fugitives.

They also remind the public that it is a punishable offence to harbour or render any assistance to the fugitives.

The police however assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, as the situation is under control.
