Some Bansang Residents Unhappy With Police By Fabakary B. Ceesay
Four people, claiming to be elders in the Bansang community, have lamented the failure of the police to act on time to avoid the incident of a mob beating a man who died soon after the assault which occured last week Tuesday, 8 April. They said that the situation could have been averted had the police acted on time when the matter was reported to them.
The four men, who asked for anonymity, condemned the move of the crowd, noting that they should not have taken matters into their hands. They complained of the lack of action taken by the police when the matter was reported; that the deceased was armed in public, threatening and using foul words to any one who dared to come near him. They were dissatisfied with the failure of the police for not executing the arrest of the deceased who wounded someone and which angered the crowd to beat him to death. They told Foroyaa that when the matter was reported to the police, for them to handle the deceased, their response was that there were only two officers on duty at the station at the time and who could not leave the station for any emergency mission.
The police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sulayman Secka, denied the allegation leveled against them. He pointed out that he confirmed from their men in Bansang that no report was lodged regarding the behaviour of the deceased prior to the mob beatings . ASP Secka staid that their men reported that they only saw the mob dragging the deceased unconsciously to the police station; that before they, the police could get him to the hospital, he died on the way.
Sheikh Bahayil Faal was mercilessly beaten to death by a mob in Bansang, Central River Region. According to police reports, they have arrested nine people in connection to the incident. They are all remanded in custody, pending investigations into the matter.
