Brikama Gets Modern Herbal Clinic By Yaya Bajo
Friends of Stone Circle Foundation, a local NGO, recently inaugurated a modern herbal centre at Brikama Nyambai. The Foundation in partnership with Traditional Medicine and Home Care, established the herbal clinic with a view to giving health care to the needy people and to complement government’s efforts in health care service delivery.
According to Mr. Saihou Fofana, Director Friends of Stone Circle Foundation herbal center, the foundation is a registered CBO, noting that they have embarked on a series of activities including sensitization, awareness creation and training of Gambians interested in traditional medicine. Mr. Fofana described the establishment of the clinic as timely, stating that it will add more value to the traditional medicine sector in the country. He further spoke about the numerous improvements traditional medicine has gone through in The Gambia, adding that more effort needs to be done to ensure the sustenance of the sector.
The Director of the Foundation opined that traditional medicine needs a lot of improvement and this can be done through partnership with government for the realization and finalization of a traditional medicine policy. He finally thanked the Department of State for Health, especially the director of National Traditional Medicine Programme for organising training packages for traditional medicine practitioners in The Gambia. The proprietor of the clinic, Dr. Muhammed Mansa, for his part, said the most important thing about traditional medicine is to treat and cure sickness. He emphasized that the venture is not for commercial gains; that his centre is open to the grassroots people needing traditional care.
Dr. Mansa noted that his herbal clinic cure about thirteen (13) different ailments, ranging from constipation, high blood pressure, hernia bleeding, stomach pain, diarrheoa, broken bone to spiritual disturbances. Dr. Mansa expressed his desire to partner with any organisation that is interested in traditional medicine. The inauguration ceremony, which was done in grand style, witnessed free treatment services from the proprietor, Dr. Mansa.
