NAYCONF 2008 Slated For December

The National Youth Conference and Festival (NAYCONF), slated for December 2008, will take place in Farafenni. Participants will be drawn from the seven administrative regions and Municipalities in The Gambia, the national youth organisations registered with the Council, stakeholders and interested people from other countries.
However, the date has not yet been finalised by the Organising Committee, which is working on it. A meeting, convened by the National Youth Council, was held on Wednesday, at the Independence Stadium in Bakau to inaugurate the Nayconf National Organising Committee.
Speaking at the meeting, the Secretary of State for Youths and Sports, Mass Axi Gai, said they are hoping to see a successful hosting of the Nayconf 2008. He, however, remarked that they do not have a budget allocation for the Nayconf 2008, but that they will try their best to raise funds. He said that they should learn from the past Nayconf and develop what they feel is their weakness in the upcoming one.
SoS Gai explained that the Organising Committee is expected to be at the forefront and hoped that they would work closely with the Sub Committees to ensure success.
“Genuine team work is needed to host a successful Nayconf,” the SoS remarked.
He advised them to sensitise youths in the regions on the Nayconcf activities.
Speaking earlier, the Director of Youth and Sports, Malang Jassey, said Nayconf is a forum were young people are given the opportunity to come up with their problems and map out a way forward. He described Nayconf as the biggest youth activity. He also expressed hope that this year’s activities will be better than the previous ones. Mr. Jassey urged all to be part of the planning for a successful activity.
Also speaking at the meeting, the chairperson of the National Youth Council, Alagie Kebbeh, gave a brief review of the last Nayconf celebrations held in 2006 in Brikama. He said Nayconf had always come with challenges, noting that last year they were faced with numerous challenges but with dedication and self-sacrifice they were able to succeed.
He noted that the challenges they faced last Nayconf would be used as a yardstick to do better this year. Their major challenge in 2006 was finance. He expressed hope that strategies will be put in place to address issues in the regions. He urged the Department of State for Youth and Sport to take the lead in putting in funds which, he said, would make it easy for others to contribute. He explained that with the last Nayconf, it was a problem getting support and that he hoped to see a smooth running of the celebrations.
