NAMS Enact Gambia Armed Forces Bill 2008

National Assembly Members, on Tuesday, enacted the Gambia Armed Forces Bill 2008, which was tabled by the Vice President and Secretary of State for Women Affairs, Dr. Aja Isatou Njie Saidy.
In presenting the Bill, the Vice President said the Bill will ensure the creation of an efficient and professional unit within the Gambia Armed Forces to adequately address issues relating to peace and security. She said at this present day, security threat characterized by terrorism, armed robbery, cross border crimes not only threaten the peace and stability of this country but the whole sub-region. “Therefore cognizant of this persuasive phenomenon, government defense policy articulates the importance of creating efficient and professional units within the Gambia Armed Forces,” she noted.
The Vice President added that Government recognizes the sanitary effect that a well organised, equipped, professional and efficient armed forces could have in the national endeavour to achieving the aspiration of the Gambian people.
The existing unit of the Gambia Armed Forces, she explained, continually face unpredictable, regional and global security threats and challenges, characterized by terrorism, trans national organised crime, armed robbery and other social ills that could pose a threat and infringe on the peace and stability of the nation.
Vice President Njie Saidy said that the global security environment requires global security counter measures, particularly, to tackle and tamper the emergence of international terrorism as well as armed robbery and other threats to national security.
The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Amendment Bill 2008 seeks to armed the GAF Act by expanding definitions of GAF to include such specialize units as the republican guards, national guards and the central forces. The Bill she went on further provides for the appointment of commanders for the control of the newly created forces.

Unfortunately Gambia is changing there definitely needs to be more police stationed at Barra crossing where theives are abundant. Opportunists who act as porters then grab and runaway with your luggage. Also there are more crimes occurring where female drivers are being ambushed and are robbed in certain parts of the country i.e Westfield Junction. Even on foot people are easy prey,and are becoming more aware that crime has started to rise.

As the saying goes "Watch what you ask for" as you may have more than a doze of what you are looking for.
Mr. Jammeh's government must be living in the past. Does history has any use for these folks? What would it take to tell these folks that creating more divisions in the arm forces only creates factions and counter factions? Does anyone of these people know what has become of the Republican Guards in Iraq?
An even closer example from which Jammeh seized power, a division of the police, Gendermere, army and National Security Service plus the Nigerian generals all created by Jawara to protect his Presidency collapsed due to inefficiency and lack of trust. How close a lesson can Jammeh learn for real?
Oh I forgot, when the inevitable is about to happen the so called powerful leaders become creative in digging their own graves. Charles Taylor thought he was on top of the world, Edie Army, Saddam just to mention a few.
When Saddam insisted he had nuclear weapons and kicked out weapons inspectors, he thought he was fooling the world in believing that he is immotal. He ignorantly manage to drag himself into a war that he was certainly to lose. This is another lesson dictators who feared for their wrong doings are supposed to learn from.
But no, Mr. Jammeh we welcome your creativity in trying to protect yourself more and more by creating forces that will never see eye to eye. I wish you will take some advice from your self made state elder Jawara about his lessons, then you will figure it out sooner...
