Eve! I think you are a wonderful and caring lady, it is a shame there are not more people like you. I dont know anything about web design or anything to do with websites so I would not know where to start. However, you should also consider other avenues:
1. try to get back Gambian doctors living abroad to come back to the Gambia. This would be extremely difficult for obvious reasons but you can at least try.
2. approach Oxfam and similar agencies -, they may advise you on best action to take. Also,we do not want obsolete drugs from the West or anywehre else being send to the Gambia, do we?
3. launch an international campaign to attract all gambians living abroad - to donate a certain percentage from the money they send to their families back in the Gambia - towards your course. To do this you may need to have an agreement with money transfer organisations e.g. western union, an express etc. If you live in the Gambia, find trusted people you can nominate who will act on your behalf in each designated country [to spread the word etc].
4. If you are living in the Gambia, use your power as a Gambian citizen to lobby the government - try and find out what they have done/or been doing, ensure you have lots of supporters, prepare you argument well [by gathering all the facts]and deal with the office of the minister of health. This would be difficult in the Gambia, I understand that, that's why it is important to have a great support network. Involve the Gambian press.
At the end of the day, you do not only want to get the drugs for the people, but medical practioners who are qualified to administer them. This is why it is important to get back Gambian doctors working abroad. It would be very ambitious, but I really believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Talk to the Gambian doctors and nurses actually living in the Gambia. They could be very useful to your course. What ever you do, do not ignore them. Make sure you engage them in this project. They may be able to give you advise that none of us from this website can give. After all, they have to live with the problems 'day in day out'. I would recommend you talk to them first before doing anything. Sent them a letter [short and precise] explaining the nature and reasons of your project -, attach a questionnaire [not more than ten questions - they dont have the time, so word your questionnaire very carefully] and at the bottom of the questionnaire ask whether they would be willing to discuss any issues further with you [face to face in the near future - ensure they put the date they would be willing to see you]. If they are willing to see you, great. These 'one on one' interviews would lead to more revelations about the problem - that the scope of the questionnaire does not allow. If they are not, at least you have the filled in questionnaires. Record their replies, they would be very important in defending your case.
These are just ideas, I am not saying they are the right ideas, that is for you to decide. I am sure most gambians really want to help, some are reluctant to support charitable organisations because, they know in their heart the money they donate would not go to the people who really need it most. This stops some of them from donating to charitable organisations [this is not only a Gambian concern but a universal one]. You would really need to address this problem if looking for donations.
keep us informed whatever course you take - and state how we can help.
I wish you all the best. |
