There have been many important issues raised during this debate. The bottom line is a lot of improvements that need to be made within Gambian Society today. One of them is the Sugar daddy syndrome many of them are many in positions of power who are luring girls and women into prostitution. Many of them who are in positions of power bolstered by taxpayers money driving government cars without using GG number plates parked outside of their girlfriends houses. Whilst many businesses men who work hard cannot afford to be supplying girlfriends with extra cash until they turn her in for a newer model. Precisely, women are being used as commodities. Why am I bringing into public domain you may ask? Quite frankly, I think this a topic that needs to be addressed because this is a blatant abuse of Gambian taxpayers money being used by so called officials milking the system and it needs to be illuminated and not to be put in subtle language but be exposed. How many women actually reach positions of power within the civil service without having had to sleep with a boss along the way to get further up the ladder? For that manner how many women in domestic service have to give their bosses extra favors just to stay in employment and have a roof over their head? How many husbands prevent their wives from working outside the home because they are afraid of them facing sexual harassment? These are types of issues that need to be addressed by Gambian Society to empower more women in Gambia and enable them to fulfill their real potential. It is ordinary women that need to reap the benefits of their labor without being sexual exploited into do so,and be able to excel under equal opportunities. Women SOS's are one thing but eradicating sexual harassment in the Gambia for all women is a step in the right direction.
Prostitution is an issue that needs to be looked into and women need to be given wider opportunities through education and vocational training to improve there employability prospects the current administration needs to look into womens' development much more widely and address these issues.
What say you?

Omega,
It is a nice touch, please go forward.
It comes back to getting jobs & vocational skill centers for them.
The two, drugs and prostitution, almost similar addictions, go hand-in-hand.
Like the old adage goes 'if wishes were horses, beggars will ride.'

Yes drugs and prostitution are factors but also there is a culture of sexual exploitation which is anchored to power and greed. Sugar Daddies are there because society turns a blind eye to it. The eye only opens if an unmarried women gets pregnant, if she isn't unmarried then pregnancy is hidden within the family. The West isn't the only place where some woman doesn't know who is the father of the child. These issues are taboo. The secret comes out when babies are dumped in the street for all to see and society acts with astonishment.
Now the sex industry isn't just a six month affair which goes hand in hand with tourism. It thrives on poverty, deprivation, low self esteem and a lack of opportunities for young women, and this what these old guys take advantage of. There are Gambian hotels which are specifically serving the purpose for Sugar Daddy retreats. No doubt a lot of taxpayers get really annoyed to see their taxes being squander on some people who are meant to be Civil Servants squandering their hard earned taxes on massaging their egos libidos. More public awareness of the issue of zero tolerance coupled with a hefty fine, humiliation of press exposure will soon change society attitude to sexual harassment in the work place. This will make Civil Servants, Military, police, other public and private sector workers think twice before manipulating women into having sex with them to keep their jobs so that they can earn a decent living or face unemployment.

I am totally in agreement.
The kind of exploitation has a lot to do with seeing others take advantage of people in poverty. The story by Foroyaa is a sad one. It opens up a whole chapter of discussion - dangers rooted in the society that are taboos for the public. This nut must crack open now.

sister omega, great debate, but unless it is brought to public attention it will go nowhere. Why is that, because some think it is there right to do this and act this way. Better opportunity for women helps, education and awareness. This has been going on for centuries and will not go away overnight. are there any womens groups that can help
