Why young People Engage in Prostitution By Amie Sanneh Why do young people engage in prostitution? I know this is a question that adults will ask themselves. Children’s Corner has an interview with some young people who engage in the act. In this edition of Children’s corner we publish below the interviews we had with them without publishing their names.
It was on a faithful Saturday night, 22nd of March 2008, when I accidentally joined a taxi with three young people at Westfield going towards Kairaba Avenue. The way these people were dressed and the way they were talking to each other created suspicion that they might be engaged in prostitution. So I decided to follow them so as to have a discussion with them. While we were in the vehicle I quickly joined in their conversation until we reached the traffic light at Kairaba Avenue where they dropped down from the vehicle. I also dropped down and one of them asked where I was going? I told them that was going to Kerr Serigne because I suspected that they were heading for Senegambia. We all crossed the road to take a vehicle going to Senegambia. The commercial vehicles (taxis) were passing but they were not stopping any except the private vehicles. It was this time that our real conversation started. I then decided to identify myself to them and the moment they discovered that I am a journalist, they became afraid but I managed to calm them down and convinced them to talk with me, which they did though with difficulty.
One of them who is 16 years old and was wearing black shorts, tight skirt and white armless top with white high hill shoes feeling comfortable with what she is putting on, identified herself as a resident of New Jeshwang. I asked her why she involved herself in such an act. She said it is a means of survival for her and her family. She said her parents are very poor and that they find it difficult to get food. “So I don’t have any option but to involve myself in this type of act. This was never my wish but I have to do it without the knowledge of my parents, though,” she remarked. The 16 year old who told me that she is a student of grade 10 said she engages in this during weekends and what she told her parents is that she has a weekend job in one of the hotels which her parents have no problem with. During the weekdays, she said, she sits at home and reads her books. “I am very intelligent and I want to complete my education and also help my younger ones too, so I have to do this but as soon as I complete my education and get a good job I will stop it because it is also not easy,” she noted.
While she was talking to me tears ran down her cheeks. She added that if one is smart, per night she can earn more than D10, 000. “You see this is a huge sum of money which one would never want to lose. This is why I’m not encouraging my friends to be involved in this because the moment you are used to it, it will be difficult to stop it. I know that what I am doing is not good but I don’t have any other choice,” she remarked.
The next person I spoke with said she is 17 years old and is not going to school so the only thing she is engaged in is prostitution. She said she has been in this for two years. She was in a short tight red dress, red high hill shoes and had a red purse. She said her parents are not aware of her engagement. She also said she told her parents that she has a job in one of the restaurants in the Senegambia area. She explained the reason why she involved herself in this. “I want to live an independent life and not to be begging any of my family members or friends”. The 17 year old said she has opened an account and also opened a business shop for her mother. She added that she is also taking care of herself and providing herself with all what a woman needs. “With this I’m not disturbing anybody, instead I’m helping people,” she posited. “My parents are not poor though but because I don’t have enough education (I stopped at grade 9 because I’m not intelligent and I know that I won’t get a job) so this is the only alternative open to me.”
The third person was wearing blue mini- skirts jeans and pink half blouse with pink high hill shoes. She said she is 17 years old and a resident of New Jeshwang. She is a student in grade 10. “I don’t like this type of life style so I only do it when I’m out of pocket”. She explained that it is one of her friends who involved her in it. That friend, she added, is not lacking anything and she also does not want to lack anything. “Though my parents are not poor, I want to take care of myself without asking for any help from anybody,” she remarked. She said she does not want any of her family members to know about it that is why she does it only when she runs out of money.
Those were the words of innocent young people who are destroying their lives in prostitution in the name of money. This should really be a cause for concern and I know that there are hundreds of them outside who can be hardly identified during the day. This is really touching and something needs to be done to address their plight, if society is to be free from such demeaning acts which serve as a last resort for many young girls. Such engagements can only guaranty moral decay and social vices for women in this country.

I feel really sorry for the first girl, cause she is doing it to survive, to help feed her family. Its sad that a young smart girl like her has to be selling herself in order for her family to have something to eat. Is there anybody trying to help these girls, or is society just shotting them out and judging them???
For the two other girls, WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH THEM????? Did they forget their brains somewhere?? Just because they wanna have some fancy stuff, they think its ok to sell ther bodies, this is just sad. |

A lot of people in the UK have to work a whole week to earn what she does in one night so I'm saving my sympathy (empathy?) for someone who deserves it! |
